Windshield repairs can only be performed on small chips or cracks. However, if the crack is bigger than a dollar bill, it’s past the point of repair and needs to be replaced. This is because if moisture gets through the crack it can damage the vinyl layer sandwiched in between the two sheets of glass that make up your windshield. When this happens it compromises the safety of your windshield.
If you have a massive chip in your Utah windshield that’s bigger than a quarter, (maybe you parked too close to the driving range) chances are they will not be able to repair it and a replacement will be necessary.
If the crack is at the edge of the windshield it will be more affected by the vibrations and the bumps in the road. This will cause it to spread very quickly and can compromise the structural integrity of the glass.
If the chip or crack is directly in the driver’s line of vision, most places will not repair it. The repair process leaves minor distortions in the glass, so rather than compromise the driver’s vision, they prefer to replace the windshield.
