Foods that might be keeping you up

Nowadays with busy work days and new technologies there are plenty of explanations for why you can’t sleep at night. One of the things that might be keeping you awake is the food you are eating before bed time. Fox News gives a list of foods that might be to blame if you can’t sleep:

Steak is a high fat protein that is not as easily digested as leaner proteins such as vegetable or carbohydrate. This means it takes your body longer too digest it, so going to bed on a completely full stomach means your body will be trying to work hard to digest your meal while it should be trying to wind down and rest. You’re metabolism is supposed to slow down when you sleep so a big meal before bed means it will take your body longer to slow down. If you’re eating steak before bed, it might be the reason you can’t sleep.

According to New York City sleep specialist Janet Kennedy, alcohol may be sedating, but it also alters your sleep cycle so you can’t spend as much time in deep sleep. The process of metabolizing alcohol wakes you up so your sleep is fragmented and not restful.

Many people have symptoms of reflux, which is one of the causes of sleeplessness. Tomatoes and other foods with high acid content such as onions, garlic, or spicy foods are likely to cause reflux. Eating these types of food just before bed can cause acid problems as soon as you lie down.

Chocolate contains caffeine, it would take a lot of chocolate to get a lot of caffeine, so eating it in moderation is just fine. For some people it would take a whole bar of chocolate to keep them up, while for others it would only take a square of chocolate. If you’re really determined to get a good night’s sleep it’s best to stay away from consuming anything with caffeine in it right before you go to bed.
