Biker Hand Signals and What They Mean

Car accidents occur every day in Utah. Unfortunately many car accidents involve motorcyclists and result in serious injuries for the biker. When you’re driving and there is a motorcyclist or biker near you it is important to pay close attention and be cautious of them because their bikes cannot signal as well as cars. This is why they have hand signals to communicate with other drivers on the road. Here is a guide of biker hand signals that every Utahn should know:

1. Left turn

1. Left turn

A left turn is signaled by extending your left arm straight out at a 90 degree angle from the body.

2. Right turn

2. Right turn

To signal a right turn, a biker will extend their left arm, bent at the elbow so the hand is pointing upwards with an open palm. Because motorcyclists control their speed with the throttle on the right hand, they cannot use their right hand to signal to other cars, this is why the left hand is used for all of the signals.

3. Slow down

3. Slow down

To indicate that they are slowing down, or that you need to slow down, a motorcyclist will extend their left arm to the side and motion downward as though patting a dog on the head.

4. Stop

4. Stop

To indicate that they are braking and you need to stop, a biker will extend his left arm bent at the elbow with the hand facing downward and palm open.

If a motorcyclist is trying to warn you of a road hazard they will indicate the road hazard by lifting their right or left legs depending on which side the road hazard is on. This will help you avoid a car accident.
