8 Best Water Sports to Try in Trincomalee - Sri Lanka’s East Coast Playground

Known as Trinco by the locals and located on the East Coast of Sri Lanka, Trincomalee is a beautiful coastal town. With its stunning turquoise waters, beaches, and vibrant marine life, Trincomalee is also a paradise for watersports and adventure. Here are 8 water sports you must try in Trincomalee.

1

Snorkelling

A short boat ride from Trincomalee’s most famous Nilaveli beach, which is located within a short drive from places like Trinco Blu by Cinnamon, will take you to the Pigeon Island National Park which is truly a snorkeller’s paradise. The island offers shallow coral gardens, clear waters, and stunning views of colourful reef fish. Given that it is shallow, it is a perfect spot for beginners and experienced snorkellers alike. This is also a great place to spot blacktip reef sharks or sea turtles if you visit during the right time, especially between May and September.

2

Scuba Diving

One of the most famous water sports in Trincomalee, is diving as this is one of the top diving destinations in the country. Dive sites around Swami Rock and Eel Rock are famous for their corals, eels, lionfish, and more. Scuba diving here will also give you a glimpse to the past with views of the world’s first aircraft carrier which was sunk in combat. However, this site is better suited to be visited by experienced divers.

3

Jet Skiing

Jet skiing in the calm waters off Uppuveli Beach will give you the adrenaline rush you need. Most resorts and beach operators rent out jet skis with a guide or allow solo rides if you’re certified. The best part? The stunning backdrop of golden sands and swaying palms makes for an epic ride.

4

Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Stand-up paddleboarding is a gentle way to explore the coast and calm bays of Trincomalee. Paddle across mirror-like lagoons or along the shoreline of Dutch Bay while soaking in the views of the ocean and the colonial-era forts. It's beginner-friendly, and great for a full-body workout that doesn’t feel like exercise.

5

Banana Boat Rides

Travelling with friends or family? A banana boat ride is the perfect group activity that blends speed with laughter. Hold on tight as you get pulled across the sea on an inflatable banana-shaped raft. It’s wild, wet, and wildly fun!

6

Kayaking

A sunset or sunrise kayaking experience will leave you with lasting memories of Trincomalee. You can explore the lesser-known water trails of Trincomalee by kayak to experience calm lagoons and engage in bird watching. You can also get a glimpse into the life of local fishing villages as well.

7

Windsurfing

Trinco is home to steady sea breezes, which makes it an excellent place for windsurfing especially during the mid-year monsoon on the east coast. Beginners can take lessons at Uppuveli beach, while more experienced windsurfers can catch stronger winds and longer runs further offshore.

8

Surfing

Although Trincomalee is not widely known for surfing, small seasonal waves at Marble Beach or Uppuveli can be perfect for beginners. Local surfboard rentals and occasional lessons are available when the surf picks up, typically between April and September.
