It's 97 degrees outside and not a cloud in sight. You can hear the rhythmic lapping of the waves on the shore and feel the light breeze blowing in from the ocean. The sand is a golden brown as you look out at the volleyball net gently swaying.
If you're anything like us here at Spicy or Mild you're appreciating the fact that beach volleyball isn't an all-year sport. Maybe it's a function of playing 20+ hours a week for the last seven months; maybe it's the wicked northern winds invoking frostbite on our ears; maybe it's just us getting old.
In our beach volleyball groups, sand socks are essential. When we start training each spring in Boston, our feet are at risk for becoming icicles in the frigid sand.
