7 Awesome Non-Touristy Places in Koh Samui - Escape the crows and discover hidden gems

Offering a combination of sun, beaches, comfort and luxury, Koh Samui is an excellent island to visit in Thailand. Whether you decide to stay at a luxury resort in Koh Samui or explore the island on a bike, here are 7 awesome non-touristy places you can visit in Koh Samui.

1

Tan Rua Waterfall

Located approximately 15 minutes away from Santiburi Koh Samui, the Tua Rua Waterfall is a great place to avoid crowds as most tourists opt to visit more famous waterfalls in the area. Tua Rua waterfall is also known as the Secret Falls as it is surrounded by the jungle. Other than the waterfall, you can find rope swings and nature trails that can take you on an adventure during your stay in Koh Samui.

2

Laem Yai Beach

Staying at a luxury resort can give you the peace and luxury you wish to indulge in. However, if you step out of your resort to explore the island more, you will find that there are many crowded bars and sunbeds. As such, it is highly recommended to visit Laem Yai Beach, located northwest. This beach offers a quiet experience with spectacular sunsets. It is a great place for reading, taking long beach walks and enjoying a quiet time listening to the waves hit the shore away from the usual party zones.

3

Thongkrut Fisherman’s Village

On the southern coast of Samui, Thongkrut Village offers an authentic look at local island life. Think fishing boats, seafood restaurants, and friendly locals without the buzz of Bophut’s night markets. You can hire a longtail boat for a private tour of the Five Islands or just enjoy fresh grilled seafood while watching the sunset over the bay. It’s slow travel at its best and still feels like a secret.

4

Art Samui Museum

Hidden in the hills of Bophut, Art Samui Museum is a fun and interactive 3D art gallery that’s as creative as it is entertaining. Unlike traditional tourist museums, this spot is often quiet and ideal for couples or families looking for something different. Visitors can find optical illusion art and trick-eye photography, which can not only be a great entertainment for adults but also for kids as well.

5

Samui Cultural Center

Culture lovers often miss this hidden gem, a small but beautifully curated space showcasing Buddhist art, traditional Thai design, and Southeast Asian history. The Samui Cultural Center is run by a passionate artist who personally guides visitors through the exhibits. This is not a commercial centre, which makes it less touristy but helps you gain deep insights into Thai spirituality and craftsmanship.

6

Coconut Museum

Coconuts are a part of Koh Samui’s heritage. As such, the Coconut Museum is a great place to visit that pays tribute to the island’s heritage. Located in Taling Ngam, this museum is a quiet and low-key place but is very informative especially if you are a coconut enthusiast. A visit to the museum is an opportunity to learn about how coconuts are harvested, processed, and used in everything from cooking to crafts. There is also a cafe that serves coconut based food and drinks for you to try.

7

Wat Khao Hua Jook

When it comes to Koh Samui, the Big Buddha and Plai Laem are often visited by many tourists. Therefore, if you want to escape crowds, Wat Khao Hua Jook is a peaceful alternative. The temple itself is simple but serene, and the climb is worth it for the breeze and the quiet.
