7 Must-See Heritage Sites in Galle Fort - Quaint Charm in the Old-World Quarter

The crown jewel of southern Sri Lanka, the Galle Dutch Fort in the city of Galle, is one of the most popular tourist attractions of the island nation. Not only is it a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also a testament to the country’s colonial history, maritime trade, and architectural splendour. So venture out and pay a visit to these 7 highlights at the historic Galle Fort, for an immersive experience of Sri Lanka's colonial heritage.

1

The Galle Fort Ramparts

The stone ramparts encircling the old town are one of the most iconic features of the fortress. With panoramic views of the wide-open seas set against the azure blue sky, walking along these age-old walls makes for the best way to explore the quaint quarter. Time your visit in the evening hours, especially during sunset, for the most scenic fort experiences.

2

The Dutch Reformed Church (Groote Kerk)

The Galle Dutch Fort basks in the glory of being home to one of the oldest Protestant churches in the country, the striking Groote Kerk or Dutch Reformed Church. Dating back to 1755, the Dutch colonial church features a simple yet dignified architecture, with gravestone-lined floors and antique furniture. Heading inside, it is a sanctuary of peace and quiet — striking a stark contrast to the bustle outside.

3

The Old Dutch Hospital

Dating back to the 17th century, the Old Dutch Hospital served as a healthcare facility for Dutch officers and soldiers. Now, the “Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct” is filled with boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants. While the building has been beautifully restored, its original colonial-era charm has been left untouched, especially the traditional pillared verandas, offering both history and modern indulgence.

4

Galle Lighthouse

Standing tall at the southeastern tip of the fortress is the Galle Lighthouse. Tall, white and mind-blowingly magnificent, the landmark lighthouse dates back to 1848 when it was first erected, but was later reconstructed in 1939. While the tower itself isn’t open to the public, it is one of the most photographed historical sites in the area. In fact, your trip to the Fort would virtually be incomplete without a picture of the white lighthouse in the backdrop.

5

Historical Homes and Colonial Architecture

There’s certainly no shortage of incredible tourist attractions in Galle, Sri Lanka, but it just wouldn’t be right without exploring the city’s slew of historical homes and colonial architecture. To further complement your experience of culture and architecture, consider a stay at one of the Dutch-colonial inspired villas, including the likes of Heenatigala Walawwa.

6

National Maritime Museum

An unmissable stop for all the history buffs to the Fort, the National Maritime Museum comes to life in a beautiful Dutch warehouse from the 1670s, set just above the Old Gate of Galle Fort. Visitors to the museum are treated to an incredible collection of shipwreck artefacts, old navigational instruments and an array of models of traditional boats.

7

The Clock Tower

While it may not be among the most looked-forward-to attractions of the Fort, the Galle Fort Clock Tower is one that’s certainly worthy of your admiration. Dating back to 1883, it was constructed in honour of a prominent local doctor.
