Heading inside, it is a sanctuary of peace and quiet — striking a stark contrast to the bustle outside.
Dating back to the 17th century, the Old Dutch Hospital served as a healthcare facility for Dutch officers and soldiers. Now, the “Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct” is filled with boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants. While the building has been beautifully restored, its original colonial-era charm has been left untouched, especially the traditional pillared verandas, offering both history and modern indulgence.
Standing tall at the southeastern tip of the fortress is the Galle Lighthouse. Tall, white and mind-blowingly magnificent, the landmark lighthouse dates back to 1848 when it was first erected, but was later reconstructed in 1939. While the tower itself isn’t open to the public, it is one of the most photographed historical sites in the area. In fact, your trip to the Fort would virtually be incomplete without a picture of the white lighthouse in the backdrop.

While it may not be among the most looked-forward-to attractions of the Fort, the Galle Fort Clock Tower is one that’s certainly worthy of your admiration. Dating back to 1883, it was constructed in honour of a prominent local doctor.
