Skype was founded in 2003. It’s a free app and is one among the top 50 downloads in the iTunes app store. It lets its users make free video calls to other Skype users all over the world along with its instant messaging service. Photo sharing is also possible through it. This messaging app is compatible with all iOS devices such as the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, and requires iOS 5.0 or later. One of the negative factors about Skype is that there are no push notifications for IMs in Skype.

WhatsApp Messenger

This is one name in messaging apps that has built a record of one being one of the most consistently top downloaded messaging apps in the iTunes store. It enables text messaging for free among individual users and among groups. With 200 million active users, WhatsApp is now one step ahead of Twitter. Putting status updates like “at the movies,” or “battery about to die” or other options makes it a fun app through which the user can also let one know what he is busy doing at that moment. The messaging system informs the sender whether the recipient has received the messages and read it or not. Also, checking the other user’s availability is easy through the “last online time” notification. Sharing video, audio, photos and other files is easy among friends.

Viber

Viber

Viber currently has 200 million users and still is growing fast. Viber not only works great as a text messaging app, but it’s also ideal for making calls. It lets one call anyone around the world for free, and the calls made through it look like a normal phone calls. The contacts of the user can be in touch using texting, photos and video messages, apart from the calling option. The conference call option of the app is appreciable, with up to 40 participants allowed to take part. International calls are free. Viber is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, but iOS 4.3 or later is required to use Viber.

Snapchat

Snapchat is a photo messaging application, and its users can take photos, record videos, add text and drawings, and share those with a list of contacts. The photos and videos shared over this app are called “Snaps”, and there is a system of setting a time limit for the recipients to view their Snaps. Once the time frame e.g. 1 to 10 seconds is over, the snaps will be automatically hidden from the recipient’s device and deleted from Snapchat’s servers. So, this is one unique characteristic of this app.

There is a large circular button that lets the users capture images by clicking. The user can also add text and/or ink drawings onto the image and send it to a particular recipient. If the same button is pressed for a longer period of time, then Snapchat works as a video recorder that records up to 10 seconds of video. Prior to sending the images, it can be saved by pressing the white arrow in the bottom left-hand corner.

A new feature launched by Snapchat lately is “Snapchat Stories” allows users to create links of shared content. On doing so, the images or videos can be viewed an unlimited number of times for over a 24-hour period.
