Utahns love their guns. Hunting and target shooting are big hobbies in Utah. Most Utahns know about guns, and gun safety, but there are some people in the world that believe ridiculous myths about guns because they’ve seen it in the movies. Here are a few of the more ridiculous myths from cracked.com:
In the movies, spies and assassins know that if you want to take out a bad guy in his office or a library, you can just use a silencer which will turn the concussive “bang” into a barely audible noise. Here’s the problem: exploding gun powder is really loud and a small metal tube won’t do a whole lot to stop that. An un-silenced gunshot is around 140 to 160 decibels, which means hearing it once can permanently damage your hearing. A silencer can take that down to 120 or 130, a little different than the movies show.
In many action movies they depict machine guns firing a hundred times more bullets than they can actually hold. An M4 machine gun can hold 30 bullets, firing a gun like that on full auto will take 4 seconds before you have to reload.
Of course a bullet proof vest will keep you more safe than you would be without one, but a bullet proof vest is not going to keep you safe from repeated shots from an AK-47 like they show in the movies. Kevlar vests are effective against most hand-guns, but they’re not so great against assault rifles, but luckily less than one percent of gun crimes involve military style rifles. There are military grade body armor which is much heavier (33 pounds), but it’s still only rated for effectiveness at further than 14-meters distance.
