A spectacular cascading waterfall located to the south of Luang Prabang, surrounded by a village and a lush jungle with serene areas for meditation by Buddhist monks. To capture this beautiful waterfall, one must travel during the dry season from November to February. The hike to the falls and crossing the village and the jungle area are tolerable with lower humidity levels and mild temperatures during these months. This natural beauty cascades over limestone formations into captivating pools at different levels. The main falls drop from a height of 60 m, which is an incredible vista with gushes of water against the lush green backdrop. Once you complete the hike, take in the beauty of the falls and even enjoy a cool dip in the pools.
Rising to a height of 100 m from the peninsula at the meeting point of the iconic Mekong River and Nam Khan River, Mount Phousi is a natural feature adding magnificence to the skyline of Luang Prabang. As an ardent hiker, one must not fail to summit this great mountain known as the spiritual heart of the city. Although surrounded by natural beauty, ascending Mount Phousi is made easier with man-made stairs. The best time to climb is at dawn to witness the glory of the sunrise as the sleeping city gradually awakens, showcasing the beauty of nature around the mountain, and the gilded rooftops of the little temples dotted around it. Apart from the sunrise, you also get to witness the breathtaking view of Luang Prabang from the summit.
Doing this hike is ideal between October and February, once the monsoon season is over and the weather is pleasant. Reaching the summit is faster on this easier hike, crossing sandy patches, bamboo steps, boulders, and rocks. A shelter with wooden benches is a welcome sight, while the panoramic view fills you with joy. Take in the beauty of the view and the surroundings before you descend using the same route.
With two viewpoints, one is 700 m high from the base, featuring a gradual climb, but it gets steeper as you ascend. The viewpoint has a covered platform with beautiful views overlooking the east. Enjoy the beauty before proceeding to the second one. The distance between the first and second viewpoints is about 300 m on a mostly flat trail on the opposite side of the cliff facing the west. The best time to do this hike to both viewpoints is at the golden hour before sunset, so that you get to the second viewpoint to witness the magnificent sunset.
