6 must-try dishes you can find in Khon Kaen – A taste of the top traditional dishes in Thailand

Made out of a combination of fresh ingredients, vibrant flavours and a balance of various spicy, sweet, sour and salty tastes, Thailand is a food lover’s paradise. Khon Kaen, the central Thai province, in particular, is a great place to taste some authentic dishes.

1

Khao Man Gai (Hainanese chicken rice)

Khao Man Gai is a Hainanese chicken rice variant. It means ‘chicken-fat rice’ in the Thai language. This meal consists of aromatic rice cooked in chicken stock and accompanied by poached chicken.  This dish usually comes with clear chicken soup and delicious dipping sauce. It is a filling meal which is very popular among locals and foreigners.

2

 Pad Thai (stir-fried noodles)

Sweet, savoury and sour flavours come to the fore when you sink your teeth into a dish of Pad Thai. Rice noodles, tofu, eggs and chicken or shrimp are usually used to make this meal. These condiments are then mixed with a flavourful sauce.  This dish is usually topped with peanuts, sprouts and lime.

3

 Tom Yum Soup

Tom Yum is a global favourite in Thai restaurants in any country. In Khon Kaen a buffet is most likely to include this soup as a part of its highlights, as it is a hit among both locals and foreigners. This famed hot and sour soup is usually prepared using fish sauce, chilies, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and galangal. Together, these ingredients are used to make this aromatic and flavourful broth, which might also feature shrimp or chicken.

4

 Khao Soi (curry noodle soup)

This is another version of a noodle soup, which is widely celebrated as a coconut curry noodle soup. It originated from Thailand’s northern region and resembles a creamy and rich broth. Egg noodles are used to prepare this delicacy along with beef or chicken. It is usually topped with chillies, shallots, pickled mustard greens, and lime. If you like a vegetarian variety of this dish, you can substitute the meat with tofu.

5

Gaeng Keow Wan (green curry)

This wonderful side dish features a creamy sauce made with coconut milk and seasoned with green curry paste that includes ingredients like shrimp paste, lemongrass, green chillies, and galangal. Meats like chicken or fish are included in this dish. You can also prepare it from vegetables like bamboo shoots and eggplants. The Globe Restaurant, belonging to Avani Khon Kaen Hotel and Convention Centre, offers a variety of these curries, like Chicken Green Curry and Beef Shank Stew with Green Curry.

6

 Som Tum (papaya salad)

Thai green papaya salad is a must-try dish during your foodie tour of Khon Kaen. The salad tastes of a mixture of sour, salty, spicy and sweet flavours. The ingredients used to prepare this delicacy are shredded green papaya, long beans, garlic, peanuts, tomatoes, chillies and a dressing that is usually prepared using fish sauce, lime juice, palm sugar, and at times tamarind paste. The ingredients used for the dish are then gently crushed in a mortar by using the pestle. You can consume this dish with other dishes like sticky rice and grilled chicken.
