Into the Wild: Unforgettable Wildlife Encounters Within Reach of Perth

Just beyond the hustle and bustle of Perth’s streets lies plenty of wildlife waiting to be discovered by nature enthusiasts. Tourists will love all that Western Australia’s capital spots have to offer, and this carefully curated guide showcases five must-visit places!

1

Perth Zoo

A must-visit for anyone in Perth, the Perth Zoo is home to over 1200 animals from all over the globe, making it a true haven for international biodiversity. The zoo is located just a few minutes away from the Central Business District (CBD) and allows visitors to get as close to the animals as possible, while prioritising their safety. Young visitors will be thrilled to see giraffes, bears, African lions, and even get up close to native animals such as the Tasmanian devil, koalas, kangaroos, and even emus. Overall, the Perth Zoo is educational, immersive, and family-friendly, making it a must-visit for families.

2

Heirisson Island

Located right in the middle of the Swan River, between the bridges of Perth’s Causeway, Heirisson Island is an artificially created island that offers its visitors a bit of wildlife in an urban setting. Visitors can witness Western Grey kangaroos roam freely in a protected enclosure. The island itself is a great spot for a slow and relaxed picnic with family and friends, a peaceful walk, or some quiet kangaroo-spotting.

3

Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA)

If tourists are more drawn to the ocean and marine life, then the Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA) located in Hillarys is an ideal spot to spend the day! Identified as one of the most iconic places of interest in Perth, The Aquarium of Western Australia houses over 45 different exhibits which highlight rare and diverse Australian marine life which are sure to thrill marine life enthusiasts and little children alike. Children and adults can visit the Turtle Rescue Centre, listen in on talks about the ocean, and play and colour in the Ocean Playroom. Visitors looking for a comfortable place to stay can consider booking the Pan Pacific Perth for its proximity to the city’s attractions.

4

Rottnest Island

A short ferry ride away from Fremantle lands travellers right on Rottnest Island, which happens to be home to the cute and smiling quokka. These photogenic marsupials have become quite popular on social media, but visitors need to be mindful while being around them. It is illegal to touch or feed these adorable creatures, and it is recommended that visitors maintain a considerably safe distance while photographing them.

5

Penguin Island

Located just 40 minutes south of Perth and a short ferry ride from Shoalwater lies Penguin Island, which is teeming with wildlife. The main residents are – as the name suggests – the little penguins, which happen to be the smallest species in the world. Visitors can observe other animals such as sea lions and dolphins, in addition to exploring the boardwalks, lookouts, and beaches. There’s also plenty of tours and excursions worth signing up for.
