CAMBRIDGE, Mass- Many viruses and bacteria infect humans through mucosal surfaces, such as those in the lungs, gastrointestinal tract and reproductive tract. To help fight these pathogens, scientists are working on vaccines that can establish a front line of defense at mucosal surfaces.

Agenus Inc said a trial of its experimental genital herpes vaccine reduced the rate at which patients released the virus, reducing the likelihood of infecting others, sending its shares up 32 percent in premarket trading. The 15 percent reduction in the release of the virus by patients receiving the vaccine in a mid-stage trial compared to those on a placebo, who showed no reduction.

Scientists believe they have finally found a permanent cure for cold sores. They say the treatment, a lotion, will be the first to kill the virus that causes the sores and infects as many as nine out of ten people in Britain at some time during their lives.

If you are among the roughly 20 percent of people who regularly get cold sores, you can now blame your genes, researchers say. The virus that causes most such sores, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), is found in as many as 9 out of 10 people, and scientists have long wondered why only a minority get the sores.
