Whether you want to unwind, go for a jog, or have a picnic, Colombo has several parks that offer a peaceful escape. Here are the top green spaces in Colombo.

Viharamahadevi Park

Right opposite the Town Hall is Viharamahadevi Park. This is Colombo’s oldest and largest public park. Once known as Victoria Park during the British era, it was renamed after Queen Viharamahadevi, a legendary figure in Sri Lankan history. The park has a central fountain, palm trees, and landscaped gardens. It’s also a great place for family outings with a children’s play area and walking paths. During the flowering season, the park is a riot of colour and is a favourite spot for photographers and nature lovers.

Galle Face Green

Galle Face Green is situated along the coast facing the Indian Ocean. This is the most famous public space in Colombo. One of the best things to do near Colombo is watching the sunset at Galle Face. Created by the British in the 19th century for horse racing, it has become a popular spot for families, couples, joggers and street food lovers. Visitors can watch locals playing cricket and flying kites in the evening.

Located in Thalawathugoda, Diyasaru Park is a 60-acre urban wetland sanctuary. It aims to educate the public about Sri Lanka’s biodiversity. There are wooden walkways, birdwatching towers and nature trails that allow visitors to explore the marshes and learn about wetland ecosystems. It’s perfect for eco-tourists, families and students.

Weras Ganga Park

Weras Ganga Park is in Bellanwila, near the Weras River. This is a modern and well-maintained green space for families. You’ll find walkways, landscaped gardens and benches that overlook the water.
