Historic Landmarks in Wan Chai, Hong Kong—Places With a Million Stories

Hong Kong's Wan Chai is a modern hub—busy, chaotic, and alluring. But did you know that, beyond its role as a CBD and top tourist destination, Wan Chai holds a rich heritage? Learn more by exploring these historic landmarks in Wan Chai.

1

Check Out the Wan Chai Pawn Shop

Easy to find from your Hong Kong Wan Chai hotel, this is a traditional Chinese pawn shop that has withstood the test of time. Wedged between the modern skyscrapers of the area, the pawn shop was called Woo Cheong Pawn Shop. The shop managed to survive modernisation, which threatened to knock it down. It was a long battle, but once the building was recognised as a heritage site, the bulldozers backed off. Today, the place functions as a teahouse named the Woo Cheong Tea House, and is open for tourists to explore. Step in for a cold drink, or even a family picnic on the rooftop. Located on Johnston Road in Wan Chai, the heritage building is just five minutes from popular hotels like Cosmo Hotel Hong Kong.

The Pretty Blue House Building

The Blue House is a historical monument that represents an architectural style that existed in Hong Kong before WWII. A short walk from Wah Yan College, you will arrive at Nullah Lane. Turn down the lane, and you will be treated to the sight of the very blue apartment building that is one of the few that boast vintage stylings. Check out the Tong Lau balconies and other details that are examples of amalgamating Chinese and Western architectural styles.

3

The Gold Bahunia Square

This iconic landmark is not to be missed when exploring top attractions in Hong Kong. The Golden Bauhinia Square can be found at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre; in the middle is the iconic monument of a golden bauhinia, symbolising the day Hong Kong was officially returned to China by Prince Charles and Governor Chris Patten in 1997. If you get there before 7.50 am, you can witness the daily ceremonial hoisting of the National Flag accompanied by fanfare from the police band—a tradition that has continued since that historic day.

4

The Floating Legco Building

One of the most treasured historical buildings in Hong Kong, the Legislative Council Building, or Legco Building, displays Neoclassical stylings and was designed by the same architects responsible for the eastern frontage of Buckingham Palace. Spanning an impressive 2600 square metres, the building is unique, as its foundation was constructed over a type of raft built from Chinese fir; hence, it appears to 'float'. The special feature is maintained through a dedicated groundwater management system while the complex itself functions as the Court of Final Appeal in Hong Kong.

Elegant King Yin Lei Mansion

Considered a celebrity building, King Yin Lei Mansion was famously featured in Enter the Dragon, a blockbuster movie. Built in 1937 by the British colonist, this elaborate and stylish structure primarily features Chinese architectural elegance. It consists of three floors, several pavilions, terraces, and a garden. The building is open for public viewing only on special days, so it's best to check its availability before you head out there.
