Negombo’s rich religious heritage reflects Sri Lanka’s multicultural identity, with an array of churches, Buddhist temples, and Hindu kovils scattered across the city. Due to Portuguese and Dutch colonial influences, Christianity has a strong presence, with over 20 churches dotting the landscape. Among them, St. Mary’s Church stands out with its striking blue façade and grand architecture, while Angurukaramulla Viharaya, known for its massive reclining Buddha and ancient murals represents Buddhism, and the Sri Singama Kali Amman Kovil, a vibrant temple dedicated to the goddess Kali, represents the Hindu side of Negombo.
