Don't Miss These 5 Attractions on Your First Trip to Bangkok – The Best of the Thai Capital Unveiled!

First off, if it’s going to be your first time in the capital of Thailand, you are in for a wild and wonderful ride. Of course, a bit of planning is needed, and to help you hit the ground running, here are five top spots you simply must check out.

1

The Grand Palace

This can be considered the ‘crown jewel’ of attractions in Bangkok. The Grand Palace is a stunning site with golden rooftops, intricate carvings, impressive statues and centuries of royal history. Within the complex is the sacred Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew), home to one of the most revered Buddha images in all of Thailand. Overall, it’s a place to walk slowly, take in every glittering detail, and even imagine what it must have been like in the days of old. Dress modestly with attire that covers shoulders and knees, and don’t forget your sunnies, because the architectural ‘bling’ here dazzles under the sun!

2

Temple of the Reclining Buddha

Within walking distance from the Grand Palace is Wat Pho, home to a famous reclining Buddha statue, which is a whopping 46 metres long and covered in gold leaf. As you take in this epic statue, ensure you make your way to see the soles of the Buddha’s feet, which have been ornately inlaid with mother-of-pearl and intricate symbols, definitely worth a closer look. The Temple of the Reclining Buddha is also considered the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, so if you are feeling tired (or knotted up), treat yourself to a proper Thai massage at this site!

3

Rod Fai Night Market

No trip to the city will be complete without some shopping under the stars, and for this, make Rod Fai Night Market your go-to choice. Easy to visit while being based at properties like Avani Sukhumvit Bangkok Hotel, this hotspot is a great place for retro finds, unique antiques, vintage collectables, and second-hand treasures. Of course, remember that bargaining is part of the fun, so bring your game face (and a friendly smile). As with most night markets, you will also come across yummy street food from BBQ delights, satay and fried noodles to refreshing Thai iced tea. Suffice it to say that you will leave with full bags and a fuller stomach!

4

Chao Phraya River

Hop on a river cruise along the Chao Phraya River, before or after enjoying the many things to do in Sukhumvit, and suddenly, Bangkok feels like a different world. It’s the perfect way to take a break from the city’s hustle and bustle as well. You will also get postcard-perfect views of landmarks like the Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun), especially magical at sunset. For a more intimate experience, opt for a longtail boat ride through the winding klongs (canals) that branch off the main river to gain fascinating insights off the beaten path.

5

Khao San Road

Loud, lively, and a little bit ‘wild’, Khao San Road is Bangkok’s backpacker central and nightlife hub. Whether you are after spicy pad Thai, alcohol served in a small bucket (yes, a bucket), great bargains or some people-watching from a roadside bar, this street’s got you covered. It’s the kind of place where the night just rolls on, with live music, foot massages on the pavement, and maybe even fried insect snacks if you are feeling brave. It’s chaotic in the best way and a rite of passage for anyone visiting Bangkok for the first time!
