7 Intriguing Experiences in Windhoek for First-Time Visitors: Discovering Namibian Wonders

As the capital city of Namibia, Windhoek has plenty of intriguing experiences that will enthral first-time visitors. From visiting historic German churches to lunching with wild giraffes, the memories you make here will be unlike any other. Here’s a list of 7 intriguing activities to enjoy during your first visit.

1

Visit the Independence Memorial Museum

This is one of Windhoek’s remarkable structures that is worth visiting. The golden skyscraper features a statue of the country’s first president, Sam Nujoma, which commemorates the country’s independence from South Africa in 1990. Interestingly, the building was completely funded and constructed by North Korea, and the museum is free to visit, making it an ideal way to learn about the country’s history.

2

Visit Christuskirche

Known as one of the most iconic landmarks in the city, this German Lutheran Church stands proudly in the middle of a roundabout just a short walk from the Avani Windhoek Hotel & Casino. Dating back to 1910, the church is hard to miss with its elaborate architectural details and sandstone structure from the time of German occupation in the country.

3

Have Lunch with Giraffes

Wildlife encounters are standard in Namibia, but none compare to the prospect of having lunch with giraffes! Thanks to the Voigtland Guesthouse, you can actually enjoy lunch, breakfast or even high tea with these gentle giants. You’ll have to make your reservation early, as the experience is only limited to 8 visitors for a day. Even so, it’s one of the more unique experiences you must try in Windhoek.

4

Stroll Parliament Gardens

If you’re looking to cool down from the heat of the day, you can enjoy a calming stroll at the Parliament Gardens located right in front of the old Parliament building. The large shady trees and green lawns provide a welcome respite from the city, and you’ll find a few large statues of key figures from the country’s Independence struggle. These only add to the unique blend of serenity and history permeating the spot.

5

Visit the Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary

No matter where you are in Namibia, a wildlife safari is an absolute must, which is why visiting the Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the top things to do in Windhoek. Just a half hour’s drive from the city, the sanctuary provides a number of wildlife experiences including overnight stays, a carnivore feeding tour, and a Cheetah walk. Even if you don’t have a car to reach Naansuke, you can still arrange for transportation - it’ll be well worth the experiences that await you once you get there.

6

Enjoy a Party at Brewer’s Market

You may not have expected it but Windhoek does have quite a vibrant nightlife, but if you’re looking for a good blend of music, great food and a lively atmosphere, Brewer’s Market tops the list. In addition to a steady stream of live performances and DJ music, this spot is where tourists and locals socialise so it’ll be a great way to get to know some of the townsfolk.

7

Explore the Oshetu Community Market

A place that isn’t always on the city travel guides is the Oshetu Community Market, a local hub where Namibian street food really shines. One of the best treats to try there is Kapana, a type of grilled meat (usually beef strips) with a reputation for being the most beloved street food in Windhoek. You can usually order Kapana strips with a serving of fresh salad with local spices, or eat it as the locals do with a few fried dough balls called ‘vetkoek’.
