Set in the historic town of Chiang Saen, this museum tells the story of life along the Mekong from prehistoric times to the height of Lanna culture. You will come across stone tools once used by early settlers, as well as bronze Buddha images, Chedi decorations, and ceramics from Northern kilns. What’s more, the displays aren’t just about kings and wars since they highlight everyday life, traditions, and artistry of the region’s early communities. Don’t miss the hill tribe section, where you will find musical instruments and traditional ornaments that bring the cultural richness of Northern Thailand to life.
Set in the Golden Triangle, this museum takes a fascinating look into the region’s dramatic past as one of the world’s most notorious opium trade zones. Located across from Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort, the Hall of Opium uses immersive exhibits and clever multimedia to take you on a 5,000-year journey, from opium’s medicinal roots to the devastating impact of addiction and trafficking. You will get to find out about secret drug routes, opium wars, and the rise of warlords, along with how Thailand turned things around with rehab and regeneration projects. A key feature here is the artificial poppy field, where you can learn about different species of poppy flowers too.
Just 10 km north of the city centre lies Baan Dam, or the Black House Museum, and suffice it to say that it will be nothing like you would expect when enjoying the many things to do in Chiang Rai. Created by visionary Thai artist Thawan Duchanee, this edgy art complex features over 40 dark-toned buildings filled with intriguing (and slightly eerie) art. You will see animal bones turned into installations, exotic skins used in design, and even hand-stamped artwork. Think of it as walking through an artist’s mind, one that’s dramatic, symbolic, and rooted in Thai philosophy. It’s a bit wild, a little intense, and completely unforgettable!
This museum is the perfect starting point before you set off on a trek to meet Chiang Rai’s hill tribes. Run by the Population and Community Development Association, it shines a light on the six main tribal groups of Northern Thailand: Hmong, Lahu, Akha, Karen, Yao, and Lisu. After a short but insightful slide show, you can wander around looking at displays of traditional clothing, harvest tools, bamboo items, and more. It’s kind of like being handed a guidebook to the region’s living cultures. Plus, the small souvenir shop here sells authentic handmade items, so you can take a meaningful piece of the experience home with you.
Another attraction located close to the Chiang Rai town centre, Oub Kham Museum is a little off the tourist trail, but that’s part of the charm. Focused on the Lanna and Tai cultures, this privately owned collection features royal court artefacts, ritual objects, Buddha images and elaborate jewellery that offer a glimpse into the life of nobility and days gone by. Don’t miss seeing a 400-year-old golden throne from the Tai Yai royals of Myanmar, which is actually said to be the last of its kind! All in all, this is an interesting museum to explore and will prove to be an absolute delight for culture buffs.
