Five Cool and Unusual Things to Do in Sri Lanka – A Healing Journey Through the Tropical Swathes of the Island

Sri Lanka is an island, and there are so many things to do. If you want to try something a bit different, it’s the perfect place to visit. Here are some cool and unusual things to do in Sri Lanka.

1

Adam’s Peak

To see some beautiful views of Ella, one of the most popular spots on the island, Little Adam’s Peak is a must-visit. It’s a fun and easy hike, and the views are spectacular at sunrise and sunset. If you enjoy walking, hiking, and simply being in nature, this is the perfect place to visit in Sri Lanka. Starting with a gentle uphill walk, the path takes you through lush tea plantations. The peak is 1,141 metres above sea level.  A treat awaits at the top, where various viewpoints offer the chance to take photos and enjoy the surroundings.

2

Tour Sinharaja Forest

Get away from the city, and you’ll discover that Sri Lanka is a country filled with unspoiled nature. One example of this is the Sinharaja Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home to diverse wildlife and birds, it’s an ancient rainforest. Join a guided tour to explore the forest, where the guide will share fascinating details about the forest and the wildlife that calls it home. A walk through the forest is just what your weary mind needs – for an hour or so, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful nature. The sound of streams and birdsong adds to the experience. Nearby, you’ll find eco-hotels in Sri Lanka. The Rainforest Ecolodge by Aitken Spence Hotels, for example, is about ten minutes from the forest.

Surfing in Hikkaduwa

The south coast of Sri Lanka is a dream destination for tourists, especially those who love to surf. You can always find a quiet surf break with only a few people out on the waves. The sun is always shining, the water is inviting, and the waves never stop coming – sounds like paradise, doesn’t it? What makes surfing in Hikkaduwa even better is that it’s not just the coast; there are green forests not too far from the shore. With peacocks and monkeys swinging from tree to tree, it’s the perfect slice of tropical paradise.

Nine Arch Bridge in Ella

One of the most beautiful spots in Sri Lanka, the Nine Arch Bridge is part of the Demodara railway loop. It stretches 91 metres long and stands 24 metres high. As the name suggests, the bridge has nine arches. Surrounded by jungles and tea plantations, the bridge is a great place to take photos. Located between Ella and Demodara stations, it was built during the British colonial period. What’s interesting is that it is built entirely of bricks, cement, and stones; no steel or metal was used. The reason was that steel was in short supply due to World War I. You’ll find cafes around promising a good view, but just below the bridge is where you get the best view.

Tea Plantations in Nuwara Eliya:

Lipton Tea is a name known around the world. Your time in Sri Lanka is a chance to visit where it all began. Trekking through the tea plantations in Sri Lanka is one of the best things to do. Local guides know those green hills in the upcountry like the back of their hand. Hike up to the Lipton Seat for the best views of the area.
