5 Things to Do in Chanthaburi, Thailand You Shouldn’t Miss – Get Ready for Some Exciting Escapades!

Exploring the province of Chanthaburi is a great way to see a whole other side of Thailand. One moment you can be exploring an ancient temple, and the next, you may be feeding fish at a waterfall! Here’s more on the captivating experiences that will make your trip special indeed.

1

Take in the Beauty of Wat Phai Lom

Step into an ancient temple called Wat Phai Lom, which will give you the feeling of journeying back in time. Established during the late Ayutthaya era, this sacred monastery has been a centre for Buddhist learning for over a century. You can visit the ornate ordination hall adorned with intricate frescoes and, in another building, take in the enormous golden reclining Buddha, which radiates serenity. Keep in mind that this is an active place of worship, so ensure you wear more conservative attire that covers bare legs and shoulders.

2

Visit the Gem and Jewellery Centre

Chanthaburi can be regarded as Thailand’s gem capital, so it’s only fitting that it has its own Gem and Jewellery Centre. Here, you can gain insights into the nation’s rich gemstone history, explore a fascinating museum with rare jewellery masterpieces, and, for something unique, watch gemstone-cutting demonstrations up close. There’s even a 3D video showcasing mining techniques, while at the on-site shop, you can purchase stunning gems too. Whether you are a serious collector or just looking for a dazzling souvenir, this place is a true hidden gem (pun intended!).

3

Play a Rewarding Round of Golf

This part of the country is also perfect for a game of golf, though keep in mind that the natural backdrops are so stunning, they could distract you from your swing! The 18-hole course at Chatrium Golf Resort Soi Dao Chanthaburi, which is set against the breathtaking sight of Soi Dao Mountain, is one such example. Designed by renowned architect Denis Griffiths, this award-winning course isn’t just about the views, however, and has some serious challenges as well. What’s more, the water hazards, bunkers, and unique layouts make every hole a new adventure, including the signature par-3, 14th hole, which can be tricky, so bring your A-game!

4

View the Scenic Phlio Waterfall

If you love waterfalls or want to spend time in nature, one of the most enthralling things to do in Chanthaburi is to take a trip to the Phlio Waterfall. This idyllic attraction can be found nestled within Namtok Phlio National Park, just 14 km from Chanthaburi city. This stunning cascade flows all year round, tumbling over rugged cliffs into a natural pool. However, the real ‘stars’ of the show are the hundreds of soro brook carp that swim in the water. You can even wade into the pool and walk among them. Don’t forget that at the park’s entrance, you will find string beans for sale to feed the fish and suffice it to say, you should be prepared for a little frenzy of excited carp!

5

Admire the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

No trip to Chanthaburi is complete without visiting the stunning Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Built in 1909 (though it has undergone changes and renovations over the decades), this grand Catholic church is a masterpiece of Gothic-style architecture. Of course, what will really catch your eye when you arrive here are the soaring twin spires, which have helped to make it one of the city’s most striking landmarks. Don’t forget to head inside, where you will find intricate stained-glass windows depicting saints and an awe-inspiring statue of the Virgin Mary, standing gracefully on a golden dais, adding to the site’s charm.
