Kogalla does not draw in travellers purely because it is the birthplace of the famous novelist, Martin Wickramasinghe. It is also renowned for its golden sandy beach. It is a great place to unwind and enjoy the serene atmosphere. You can get a glimpse of the local lifestyle as you see stilt fishermen at work. Catch a boat tour to the island’s biggest lake, Kogalla Lake. Apart from the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum which has some exhibits of the late novelist on display, you can also visit Handunugoda Tea Estate which is renowned for its expensive Virgin White Tea.
