Koh Lanta, a beautiful island in the Krabi province of Thailand, is renowned for its pristine beaches and laid-back vibe. One of its attractions is Khlong Chak Waterfall, a tranquil location hidden away in the island's southern jungles. Unlike some of Thailand's more well-known waterfalls, Khlong Chak offers a secluded, off-the-beaten-path experience with a thrilling jungle trek. If you're planning a visit, here is everything you need to know.
To reach Khlong Chak Waterfall, you need to first get to Koh Lanta. Koh Lanta can be accessed by ferry and minivan from surrounding locations like Krabi, Phuket, and Koh Phi Phi. The most common way is to fly to Krabi International Airport and then take a minivan or taxi to Koh Lanta on the car ferry.
Visiting Khlong Chak Waterfall is one of the best things to do in Krabi. It is located in the southern part of Koh Lanta, and takes about 30 minutes in a car or scooter ride from Saladan Pier. There is no direct public transport there, so the most convenient way to travel is by renting a scooter (200-300 THB for a day) or hiring a taxi from your hotel, Avani+ Koh Lanta (around 500-800 THB round trip).
From Ban Saladan, head south on the main road from Klong Nin Beach and Kantiang Bay. It's only a 10-minute drive south from here. Look for signs that say "Waterfall" and "Elephant Trekking."
When you reach the entrance, there is a small parking area where you can leave your scooter or car. Parking is free, but as a gesture of goodwill, you may be asked to buy a snack or beverage from the nearby stalls.
There is no admission fee to the waterfall, but a donation (20-50 THB) may be requested by some locals. The trailhead is near an elephant trekking camp, but supporting animal tourism is not recommended. Instead, proceed directly into the jungle trail to the waterfall.
The hiking trail is about about 1.5 km (one way) and the journey takes 30-45 minutes (depending on speed and water levels). The trail is easy to moderate, and is perfect for beginners with a sense of adventure. The trail winds its way along a tiny stream, so prepare to wade through water puddles now and then. In the dry season, the stream should be shallow enough to wade through, however during the rainy season it’s more difficult.
The jungle is dense, with large trees, vines, and wildlife. You might spot butterflies, lizards, and tropical birds. The Khlong Chak Cave is a small cave along the route, which warrants a short stop. You may be required to cross a few bamboo bridges, which will be an added thrill. Listen to the birds, insects, and even monkeys in the distance.
After trekking through the jungle, you’ll reach the stunning waterfall, which cascades down a rocky cliff into a shallow pool. The flow of the waterfall may differ depending on the season:
Rainy Season (May-October): Stronger waterfall with more volume
Dry Season (November-April): Less water, but still beautiful
At the waterfall, you can do some swimming or cool off. The pool is shallow but refreshing. You can also relax here, as it is surrounded by lush jungle, making it a great place to unwind. The scenery is also perfect for capturing some great pictures!
The best time to visit Khlong Chak Waterfall is from November to February when it's cooler. If you visit in March and April, the waterfall will be nearly dry. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon to escape the heat and crowds.
Don’t take the elephant trekking tours. The elephants are often mistreated, and the jungle is best accessed on foot.
Monitor the weather, as heavy rainfall can cause slippery trails, whereas dry season could decrease water volume.
Always be respectful of your surroundings. Do not dispose of trash, or deviate from marked paths.
