6 Must-Have Experiences in Livingstone: Enjoying the Best of Nature & Culture

The city of Livingstone in southwestern Zambia is often thought of as a great starting point for exploring other destinations in the county. However, the city has its own unique charm with a fascinating blend of history and culture. Here’s how you can explore the hidden allure of Livingstone.

1

Visit Victoria Falls

If there’s one thrilling site to witness when you visit Livingstone, it’s the iconic Victoria Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in the world. It is a great example of nature’s beauty and sheer power, with the cascading waters continuously emitting a thunderous roar that you can hear before you even arrive at the site. If you’re the daring kind that wants to do more than observe this majestic waterfall, you can take a dip in Devil’s Pool, a natural pool section set right at the edge of Victoria Falls.

2

Explore Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park

Once you’re done exploring Victoria Falls you can head over to the nearby Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, an area that covers more than 50 square miles. The park is home to many animal species including elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo and bird species. The resident population of white rhinos is a particular highlight and you’ll see that these animals are often under the protection of rangers.

3

Learn Local History at the Museum

Livingstone Museum is the oldest and largest museum in Zambia and as such is the best way to get to know the country through its past. The museum covers a range of topics through separate sections, including history, archaeology, natural history and ethnography. It also features a unique collection of artefacts and memorabilia of David Livingstone, the first European to see Victoria Falls - you’ll find everything from signed letters to tribal artefacts to a life-size model of a village.

4

Visit the Railway & Gateway Museums

You can also discover more history about the country at the Railway Museum and its sister museum, the Gateway Jewish Museum. The former is dedicated to the country’s history of rail transportation and features a fascinating collection of vintage carriages, locomotives and more railway artefacts. The latter offers a closer look at the history of Livingstone’s Jewish community and also includes the country’s first synagogue and a Jewish cemetery.

5

Tour Mukuni Village

Although it is located just outside of Livingstone, the Mukuni Village is worth a visit if you’re eager to dive deeper into local culture in Zambia. You can explore the large outdoor market where you’ll find local artisans selling their handmade crafts. Not only is the village a great place to pick up souvenirs but it also gives you a chance to explore local traditions. If you are unable to experience this traditional village setting, you can come close to it at hotels like Avani Victoria Falls Resort which provides unique cultural experiences like a vibrant Boma dinner, which centres around authentic village life.

Cruise Along the River

The Zambezi River is one of Africa’s most well-known and beautiful rivers, so you shouldn’t miss a chance to experience it first-hand. Your best option would be to join a sunset cruise where you can gently traverse the river waters, spot various animals along the riverbanks and enjoy stunning views of the sunset. Most river tours offer snacks and drinks so you’re guaranteed to enjoy a memorable cruise along the river.
