Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s wondrous UNESCO World Heritage Site, has many things to offer travellers from all walks of life. Here is a breakdown of some sites worth visiting in the area in 2025.

 Gal Viharaya 

One of the most unmissable places to visit in Polonnaruwa for any traveller is Gal Viharaya (Rock Temple). This landmark site was constructed by King Parakramabahu I and is renowned for its Buddha statues carved out of rock. The standing Buddha, reclining Buddha, and seated Buddha are some of the statues found here, which have been carved into a mammoth granite rock face.

Polonnaruwa Archaeological Museum

If you are seeking insights into Polonnaruwa’s ancient history you need to step into the Polonnaruwa Archaeological Museum. Visitors can embark on an enthralling journey here through the cultural legacy of the ancient city. You also get many artefacts like tools, houseware, coins, and jewellery there.

 Parakrama Samudra

Parakrama Samudra is the biggest irrigation tank built by King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. It was estimated that 18, 200 acres of paddy agricultural land were irrigated by the tank’s 5,600 acres of water. Those who visit this site can engage in activities like birdwatching, taking boat rides and inspecting local villages. Visit this place especially if you crave some serenity.

 Nissanka Latha Mandapaya

Renowned for its exceptional columns which feature unique carvings, Nissanka Latha Mandapaya is a much-visited tourist site in the area because of its great ancient architectural features. Visit this site and you will be able to witness a stone railing, a single stone doorway and a miniature stupa there. This structure was designed to hear and recite Buddhist texts. It was built by King Nissanka Malla in the 20th century.

 Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu

Bringing the splendours of the bygone era to life, the Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu takes its visitors on a journey to its ancient architectural wonders. Though you only see the ruins of the grand seven-storey palace here today, you will still be able to re-image the grandeur of the palace via the remaining carvings and stonework found here. The Royal Bath or Kumar Pokuna and King Parakramabahu’s Council Chamber are crucial components of the palace grounds.

 Dimbulagala Ancient Temple

A noted place for its historical and religious significance, the Dimbulagala Ancient Temple comprises many attractions like archaeological sites and caves which contain Brahmin inscriptions. It was known as a Theravada Buddhist monastery. Today it houses a few of the most priceless pieces of early frescos found on the island. You can also get panoramic views of the area when you make it to the top of the mountain.

 Minneriya National Park

If you are an elephant enthusiast, you need to visit Minneriya National Park. It is known as a place which has the biggest gathering of Asian elephants. You can also witness other wildlife there such as sloth bears, leopards, purple-faced langurs, deer and birds.
