5 Key Things to Know About Air Travel: Preparing for Your First International Flight

The prospect of going on your first international flight can be exciting. Still, it isn’t all about cosy window seats and relaxing to a good movie. Air travel requires plenty of preparation beforehand, so here are a few key things to keep in mind to ensure that your first flight experience is smooth.

  1. Luggage Restrictions

Each airline will have its restrictions on maximum weights and sizes for suitcases and hand luggage. While it is possible to exceed these limits you’ll likely have to pay a large fee. Most airlines also ban explosive or flammable items, sharp objects, and excessive liquid quantities. It is important to check the maximum amount of liquid you can carry and how you are required to pack it. These details can be obtained by researching online or inquiring from the airport or airline. Reputed airline sales agents like Mack Air may also be able to help you if you’re planning to visit Sri Lanka through any of their airlines like AirAsia Sri Lanka.

  1. Rules for Each Country

Each country has its own rules and regulations about what you can and can’t bring with you. While most countries in the European Union have the same rules regarding alcohol, food and plants, other countries may have different regulations. Some impose a ban on certain food products or food quantities while others explicitly ban the transport of alcohol. If you plan on carrying any kind of valuables like historical objects, art pieces and the like, it is best to check for any restrictions or rules regarding such items.

  1. The Appropriate Clothes for Flying

This might seem insignificant amidst all the packing and organising, but wearing comfortable clothing for your flight is vital. This is especially important for longer flights for which you’ll be in your seat for long periods. Select clothes that have a soft, comfortable material and which don’t scratch or itch your skin. Consider bringing a pair of socks and a warm jacket on board as the air conditioning on planes can get a little intense.

  1. Be Prepared for Check In

Once you reach the airport, your luggage won’t be the only thing that undergoes a security check. Every airport conducts a personal security check on every passenger so you’ll need to be prepared. You’ll be asked to empty your pockets, and extra layers of clothing like jackets, scarves, and even your trouser belt and shoes. These items will be placed in a separate basket and scanned separately while you walk through a special scanner gate. Airport security may also perform a brief physical inspection before you’re let through.

  1. Keep Your Kids Entertained

If you’re travelling with children you need to be prepared for when the excitement of being in a plane eventually wears off. The best thing to do to keep them occupied is to bring along their favourite toys. If toys aren’t an option, pack a few books or even a colouring book to give them something more tangible to engage with. If the flight provides individual screens for watching movies, you can put on a good film (one that’s child-friendly of course) to keep them entertained at least for a few hours.
