Top Attractions to Visit in Nizwa: Exploring the Wonders of an Ancient City

Tucked away amidst the highest mountains in Oman is the ancient city of Nizwa, a former hub for trade, religion, education and art that still maintains its historical charm. If you plan on exploring the city’s unique identity as one of Oman’s oldest cities, here are some of the top historical and cultural highlights to check out across Nizwa.

1

Nizwa Souq

A great way to experience the Oman of old is to visit the Nizwa Souq, a vibrant marketplace which features ancient architectural features and unchanged structures in selected areas. But what gives this place more of its vibrant charm is the flow of shoppers rummaging through the various items on sale. While most arrive in the mornings for fresh meat and vegetables, the rest of the souq features fascinating souvenirs which include fresh dates, pottery made by local artists, the country’s trademark souvenir of Frankincense, woven products like mats and baskets and even Arabian decor like mosaic lamps.

2

Fort Nizwa

If there’s one thing Nizwa is famous for, it’s this historic fort, one of the most visited attractions in Oman. Although it isn’t yet recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fort contains numerous exhibits and information that reveal Oman’s rich past. It was constructed over 12 years by Sultan Bin Saif Al Yaruba, way back in the 17th century, and is most known for its round tower that stands 40 metres tall. In addition to exploring the exhibition halls, armoury and courtyard, visitors relish climbing to the top of the tower to witness views of the surrounding mountain ranges and date plantations.

3

Bahla Fort

Unlike its more well-known counterpart, the Bahla Fort is a UNESCO Heritage Site and is the only fort in Oman recognised as so. It is said to have been built by the Banu Nebhan tribe, sometime between the 12th and 15th centuries. Owing to the fort’s original weak structure made from mud and straw, a complete renovation was done in 2004. The fort now features three sections - the Al-Qasabah, the Bait-al-Hadith and the Bait-Al-Jabal. The structure is also known for its castellated parapets and round towers combined with solid perimeter walls that speak to its pre-gunpowder style defence.

4

Nizwa Grand Mall

If you are staying at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort and are looking for a different experience in the city, consider visiting the Nizwa Grand Mall. The mall has plenty of options, featuring more than 80 shops that display local and international brands. It also goes above and beyond to give you a stellar experience; it features exhibition areas, plenty of cafes and restaurants, a bowling area and even an ice skating rink.

5

Jabreen Castle

Another popular historical structure in Nizwa is this magnificent castle, famous for its battlements. Constructed in 1675 by Imam Bil Arab Bin Sultan, the castle once served as a learning centre, spreading knowledge across several branches of study including medicine, Islamic law and astrology. It features three stories and two towers with interiors including large halls and rooms that speak to a grand past. Visitors often head to the base of the castle’s flagpole to enjoy a unique view of its interiors.
