Known as a playground for watersport enthusiasts, Kalpitiya, the coastal destination in the Puttalam district has an abundance of other attractions beckoning to tourists.  Here is a breakdown of some activities which you can engage in to make memories with your loved ones.

Watersports 

Kalpitiya is known for its watersports and the top activity here is kitesurfing. It is a surface water sport that is a blend of other sports like snowboarding, wakeboarding and surfing. The success of the activity depends on the wind and water conditions as a rider uses a kite to catapult themselves across the water on a board. Other watersports you can try include snorkelling, windsurfing, water skiing, kayaking, scuba diving, stand-up paddleboarding and more.  Wilpattu National Park

 Kalpitiya Dutch Fort 

Built between 1667 and 1676, the Kalpitiya Dutch Fort is a historical landmark in the area. It is made of coral and limestone. It is linked with a rich history of being occupied by the British military for more than 60 years, maintained by the Dutch for more than 90 years, and served as the base for the Sri Lankan Navy during the Civil War.

 Kalpitiya Dutch Church 

Known as one of the most ancient protestant churches on the isle, the Kalpitiya Dutch Church is an epitome of spirituality and culture of the region. Constructed in 1706, this building boasts of simple architectural features which have descended from the colonial period. A noteworthy aspect about this site is the headstones engraved with inscriptions and epitaphs.

Whale and dolphin watching 

Nestled in the island’s northwest coastline, Kalpitiya is renowned as a great spot where you can take whale and dolphin watching tours. It is best to engage in this activity from November to April where there are calm waters and plenty of dolphins swimming by. Guests at Dolphin Beach Resort will be able to witness pods of dolphins at Alankuda Beach. If you venture to the deeper waters you will be able to see six varieties of whales: Minke, Pilot, Dwarf Sperm, Blue, Brydes, and Melon Headed.

Kalpitiya Lagoon has gained recognition for its mangrove forest. This biodiversity hotspot is home to a variety of different marine species like dolphins, turtles, manta rays, and fish verities. Some activities you can engage here include taking a boat ride, snorkeling and walking.
