6 Things to Do in Windhoek: Discovering the City’s Best-Kept Treasures

Namibia’s capital city is more than just a point of entry into the country; it is an intriguing destination filled with vibrant experiences that speak to Namibia’s multicultural makeup and eventful past. If you want to get to know Namibia, here are the best things to do in Windhoek that take you on a fascinating and entertaining adventure.

1

Visit the Independence Memorial Museum

This ancient museum was inaugurated in March 2014, on the country’s 24th Independence anniversary. The museum focuses on Namibia’s road to independence and specific events that led to it such as the national liberation struggle and the anti-colonial resistance of the Namibian people. You’ll find a wealth of information displayed through various artefacts, paintings and displays. The museum building alone is a sight to behold; the uniquely shaped golden structure was funded for and constructed by North Korea as a gift to Namibia. The front of the building features a statue of the country’s first president Sam Nujoma who took office in 1990.

2

Explore Christuskirche Church

This stunning German-Lutheran church was built in the early 1900s and is one of the iconic sights in Windhoek. Its structure was modelled after that of a basilica which is a rectangular church with two aisles and a rounded end. The vibrant sandstone structure is impossible to miss as it is located on a traffic island in the middle of the city. It was officially declared a national monument in 1974.

3

Take a Katutura Township Tour

This township is located approximately 20 minutes from Avani Windhoek Hotel and Casino and was founded as a resettlement area for Namibians during the apartheid period. A tour of the township gives you a unique insight into the culture and history of the Namibian people who still call the area their home. You can also sample their handicrafts, food and music for an authentic experience of their culture. Taking a tour is the best way to explore the township as you’ll be accompanied by tour guides who provide you with various anecdotes and knowledge about the communities that live there.

4

Try Kapana at Oshetu Community Market

Another authentic experience in Windhoek involves trying Kapana, a popular street food best served at the Oshetu Community Market. Kapana is made by coating strips of meat, usually beef, with an assortment of spices, and then grilling them. The meat is often served with traditional sides like pap, bread or a mix of vegetables. While you’re there sampling this delicacy you can also explore other areas of the market that sell other street food, home products and clothes.

5

Visit the Parliament Gardens

If you need a breath of fresh air or a few quiet hours of relaxation you can head to the Parliament Gardens near the Independence Memorial Museum. The park is appreciated by locals and tourists alike for its tranquil mood and vast open spaces which provide ample room for strolling and picnics. The garden also features plenty of flower beds and well-maintained lawns that add to its overall appeal.

Party at The Brewer’s Market

You may not have expected it but Windhoek has a vibrant nightlife culture, which makes it the best place to stay in Namibia. One of the places to be to experience it is the Brewer’s Market. This bustling pub is known for its lively atmosphere and the variety of beers it offers. You can use the opportunity to try a few local beers although international varieties are also available. You’ll also find a menu similar to that of a traditional English pub, serving familiar snacks and food.
