Adopt a bacterium- Nitrosomonas europaea

Introducing my versatile adopted bacterium, Nitrosomonas europaea! I am fascinated by how this bacterium has the extraordinary skills of removing harmful ammonia in wastewater treatments. This bacterium possesses strong skills in improving our wastewater quality by undergoing nitrification, a significant industrial process.

Nitrosomonas europaea - microbewiki

Nitrosomonas europaea is a Gram-negative chemolithoautroph with the shape of bacillus. It is an ammonia-oxidizing bacterium that lives in places rich in ammonia and inorganic salt, such as soil, sewage, freshwater, the walls of buildings and on the surface of monuments. It's often found in the polluted areas where the air contains high levels of nitrogen compounds.

Nitrosomonas europaea- contribution to nutrient cycle

Nitrosomonas europaea, this Nitrifying bacteria plays an important role in the availability of nitrogen to plants and hence in limiting CO2 fixation. The first step is the treatment of industrial and sewage waste by oxidizing ammonia to nitrate. N. europaea is capable of degrading a variety of halogenated organic compounds. The ability of nitrifying organisms to degrade some pollutants may make these organism attractive for controlled bioremediation in nitrifying soils and waters.

Nitrosomonas uses the Calvin-Benson cycle as a pathway for Carbon fixation. For this reason, all of the species have an operon that encodes for the RuBisCO enzyme.[21] A peculiarity is found in N. sp Is79 in which the two copies of the operon encode for two different forms of the RuBisCO enzyme: the IA form and the IC form, where the first one has a major affinity with the Carbon dioxide.

Biotechnological applications of Nitrosomonas europaea

The chemolithoautotrophic nitrifier Nitrosomonas europaea is useful for biotechnological processes such as bioremediation of toxic chemicals, as well as playing an essential role in the global nitrogen cycle

Ethical considerations in bioprospecting and genetic engineering of Nitrosomonas europaea

Nitrosomonas europaea has been used in most of the studies on genetic engineering of AOB. Chain et al. (2003) reported the complete genome sequence of Nitrosomonas europaea, making this species the first choice for direct genetic modification.
