Top Scenic Spots to Visit in Kandy: Witnessing Memorable Sigts in Sri Lanka’s Ancient City

Located on a plateau surrounded by massive mountain ranges, the city of Kandy in central Sri Lanka is a scenic wonder in more ways than one. It still carries plenty of natural landscapes and picturesque views perfectly complemented by a rich cultural heritage. This combination of nature’s serenity and cultural charm now defines the former royal city as one of the island’s most beautiful places. Here are some of the top sites to visit if you plan to experience the unparalleled beauty of Kandy in Sri Lanka.

1

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Commonly referred to by locals as the ‘Sri Dalada Maligawa’ this sacred Buddhist temple is one of the most venerated by Buddhists worldwide, and is a must-visit if you’re staying at nearby hotels like Cinnamon Citadel Kandy. It gets its grand reputation for housing the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha, which is now stored in a golden chamber in the nearby royal palace. The temple itself is a sight to behold, with golden roofs and sparkling white exteriors. Once inside, visitors are welcomed with an ambience that is both grand and peaceful; the interior columns and roofs are made of exotic wood, lacquer and ivory, and if you visit during a puja, you’ll see the tooth relic chamber made visible for public viewing.

2

Kandy Lake

A great follow-up to your visit to the Dalada Maligawa is the Kandy Lake or Kiri Muhuda which borders the sacred temple. This artificial lake features a pathway that extends for 2.1 miles and is perfect for a calming walk after you visit the temple. In addition to the scenic views of the lake’s waters surrounded by distant hills, you can also take in the sight of its bordering biodiversity consisting of various plant and animal species. For a more memorable experience at the lake, you can enjoy a boat ride across the waters that will allow you to appreciate the scenic views up close.

3

Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

Another notable spot that makes an incredible site for sore eyes is the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya. This floral haven features more than 4000 plant species which include palm trees, medicinal plants, orchids and several other flowering plants. They are spread out across several gardens that have gorgeous floral and plant representations which can make you feel like you’re in a fairytale wonderland. As you wander through each immaculately maintained space, you’ll notice various animal and bird species that take shelter among the foliage; these include magpies, monkeys and even turtles.

4

Udawattakele Sanctuary

If you want to immerse yourself in Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity, the Udawattakele Sanctuary is worth a visit. Located close to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, this bio-reserve stretches across 257 acres and features several Buddhist monasteries hidden within its dense vegetation and forest cover. This gives the site a unique spiritual charm as you wander along during your trek and come face to face with yet another hidden temple. The sanctuary is also a bird watcher’s paradise, featuring more than 80 species of birds. You’ll also spot the occasional barking deer and toque macaques, as well as several Indigenous trees and shrubs that add to the site’s beauty and aura.

5

Kandy Viewpoint

Visiting the Kandy Viewpoint while you’re in the city is one of the best things to do in Kandy, especially if your main goal is to appreciate its beauty. This is considered the highest point in the city from where you can take in magnificent views of the Kandy Lake and the Dalada Maligawa Temple just below it. Many visitors arrive at the spot to witness the sunrise or sunset, both of which highlight the city’s picturesque beauty when bathed in the golden sunlight.
