How to Make the Most of 2 Days in Kandy? - Exploring Sri Lanka’s Charming Hill Country

Kandy, known as the cultural capital of Sri Lanka and the gateway to the charming hill country, is a city that truly lives up to its many labels. Blessed with both the serene nature of the central highlands and sacred spiritual significance, the picturesque heritage city offers a fascinating blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. If you're headed to Kandy but with limited time on your hands, this 2-day itinerary will help you make the most of your time in the hill country station.

1

Day 1: Arriving in Kandy

Touching ground in Colombo, home to the country’s only international airport, consider taking a scenic seaplane transfer to Kandy with the likes of Cinnamon Air. Enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the idyllic island nation and make the journey to the central highlands an experience in itself. Upon your arrival in Kandy, check into one of the many elegant hotels and resorts in the city. Take your time to settle in and immerse yourself in the laid-back ambience of the serene hills.

2

Day 1: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

The crown jewel of the hill country of Sri Lanka, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the quintessential destination to kick off your Kandy getaway. Nestled right in the heart of Kandy, the world-renowned golden-roofed temple is what single-handedly put the cultural city on the map for most, if not all, of its travellers. The striking Buddhist temple is best known for housing one of the most precious relics revered by Buddhists all over the world — an actual tooth of the Lord Buddha himself.

3

Day 1: Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya

As the sun goes down and the azure blue skies slowly fade away, embark on a hillside adventure to visit Kandy’s famous hilltop temple, Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya, better known as Big Buddha Temple. Kandy sure does have a plethora of Buddhist temples, but as past travellers would unhesitantly agree, this is one that’s totally unmissable. The giant white Buddha statue, resting in all its glory, greets you as you make your way up the long flight of stairs. Awaiting at the base of the statue is the real deal — breathtaking panoramic views stretching all the way across the city and beyond — a sight that’s sure to leave you enthralled.

4

Day 2: Royal Botanic Gardens

After an early breakfast, set out on a drive slightly outside Kandy to make your way to the Royal Botanic Gardens. Covering an area of 147 acres, it is the largest of the five botanical gardens in Sri Lanka. From the towering palms that line the entrance to the impressive collection of orchids and the whole host of exotic plants, visitors to the gardens sure do have a lot to see.

5

Day 2: Sample Local Cuisine

Fun, exciting and fascinating things to do in the charming hill country may be plentiful, but your trip to Kandy wouldn’t be complete without getting a taste of the island nation’s mouth-watering delights and delicacies. Steer clear of the gourmet buffet at your swanky resort and embark on an exploration of local cuisine to unleash the true foodie in you. From staple rice and curry to purely traditional milk rice and sweet, sweet watalappam, you are absolutely spoiled for choice.

6

Day 2: Udawattakele Forest Reserve

Kandy City, while undoubtedly beautiful, may not be the most peaceful of places. Udawattakele Forest Reserve, only a 10-15 minute walk from the city centre, is a world of peace and quiet. Indulge yourself in a refreshing nature walk while keeping your eyes peeled for birds, monkeys, and other wildlife.
