Top Marine Life to Spot While in the Maldives - Life Under The Waves

The Maldives is not just a paradise of white beaches and turquoise lagoons; it’s also a gold mine for marine biodiversity. Beneath its clear waves lies an underwater world brimming with life. Discover the top marine life you can spot around the islands, with a guide to the seas of the Maldives.

1

The Coral

The coral reefs of the Maldives are one of the founding pillars of the marine ecosystem, and the reason the low-lying islands are still afloat. With over 200 species of coral, these structures of vivid hues provide shelter and sustenance to countless marine species. From brain coral to staghorn coral, the reefs glow in shades of pink, purple, and gold. Coral gardens like those in Banana Reef or HP Reef are top Maldives tourist attractions for a reason, as they are must-see spots for their intricate beauty and thriving biodiversity.

2

Reef Fish

The reefs buzz with life, showcasing countless species of reef fish. Virtually any island resort around the archipelago offers snorkelling expeditions along the reefs, including NH Collection Maldives Havodda Resort in the Huvadho Atoll—venture out to sea to witness the colourful world of reef life. Clownfish can be found darting among sea anemones, their striking orange bodies contrasting against the swaying tentacles. Sweetlips, with their striped patterns and amusing features, glide gracefully along the reef. Angelfish, adorned with vivid blues and yellows, add bursts of colour, while red snappers patrol the deeper waters in search of prey.

3

Sea Turtles

Sea turtles are a highlight of any underwater adventure in the Maldives. Green turtles and hawksbill turtles are commonly spotted gliding through the water or grazing on seagrass beds. Dive sites like Turtle Reef are excellent places to observe these gentle, ancient creatures up close. During nesting season, female loggerheads and olive ridley turtles can be seen after dark, wandering over to the shores and laying their eggs.

Manta Rays

The Maldives is one of the best places in the world to encounter manta rays. These graceful giants, with wingspans that can exceed 5 metres, gather in cleaning stations around the atolls, including sites close to Malé, the Maldivian capital. Hanifaru Bay, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is famous for hosting manta ray feeding frenzies during the plankton season from May to November. Lucky snorkelers may even see up to 200 manta rays at once, or at least a minimum of 5-10 on most days.

5

The Sharks

Shark encounters in the Maldives are unforgettable. Whale sharks, the gentle giants of the ocean, are a highlight, especially in South Ari Atoll. Divers can also spot nurse sharks resting on sandy floors or tiger sharks cruising the deep blue. Despite their reputation, most sharks in the Maldives pose no threat to humans and are a testament to the ocean's apex predators' beauty and importance.

More Pelagic Fish

Further in the depths of the deep ocean, the Maldivian waters host an array of pelagic fish. Schools of tuna and jackfish dart through the currents, their streamlined bodies built for speed. Groupers, often found near coral outcroppings, display bold colours and patterns. Barracudas, with their sleek bodies and sharp teeth, patrol the open waters, adding a touch of drama to the underwater scene.
