Unique Family Adventures in Hobart: Unforgettable Experiences to Last a Lifetime

The island of Tasmania has plenty of unique sights, sounds and tastes to keep you on your toes, and this is particularly true of its capital Hobart. If you’re looking for a great adventure to enjoy with your family, Hobart has all manner of quirky attractions and activities that will leave you and your kids astonished, to say the least. Forget the typical theme parks and ocean excursions, here are some of the most unique and memorable experiences to enjoy in Hobart with your family.

1

Explore the Museum of Old and New Art

While this museum focuses on life’s darker side and themes, it does have plenty to offer for young families and kids. The outdoor area is of particular interest to families, as it features large sculptures that also function as a playground that kids will enjoy. In addition to this, the museum has several restaurants and cafes at which you can enjoy a meal, and live music performances either outdoors or indoors, that add to its lively atmosphere. If you’re looking for a bit of guidance on what to explore, you can consult the museum’s staff who will recommend an itinerary based on your requirements and sensibilities.

Embark on an Adventure at TMAG

Take your little ones on a truly Tasmanian adventure at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, a one-of-a-kind museum that follows a ‘Kids in Museums Manifesto’ in order to provide the best experiences possible for kids. For a truly adventurous experience, grab a Discovery Backpack filled with an assortment of objects, props and activities that help when exploring several areas of the museum. Or you can take your kids to experience the ‘Mapiya Lumi’ exhibition, an engaging experience that allows children to discover Tasmania as if it were a “little big home”.

3

Meet Some Tasmanian Devils

Your stay in Tasmania wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the island’s famous namesake animal, the Tasmanian Devil. If you are staying at an accommodation in Hobart waterfront, you can find them at the nearby Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary which you can explore at your own pace or enjoy an organised 45-minute tour. Alternatively, you can also visit the animals at the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo where they roam free. Here you can enjoy the ‘Devil Tracker Adventure’ which is a guided tour within the native forest to see and understand how the animals are kept track of.

4

Visit the Pooseum

Hobart unabashedly shows off its quirkier side at the Pooseum, a museum dedicated to animal droppings. If you’ve ever had unanswered questions about animal faeces, this museum gives you all the answers with more than 50 informative panels and 40 videos on touchscreens. What’s great about the displays is that there is a separate corner for kids, that provides information that’s easily understandable and engaging. You can also visit the museum’s Pootrid Shop for some quirky souvenirs and gifts to remember this visit. The museum is open from Wednesdays to Sundays throughout the day, giving you ample time for a museum visit like no other.

Explore Old Hobart Town

Located not far from Somerset on the Pier Hobart, this historic town is another great place to visit that takes you back in time to 1820. It is the only historical model village in the country and replicates the reality of its time. As you walk along the streets, you’ll discover more than 60 replica buildings and 500 period figurines along with signages that present important historical details.
