Tips for Furnishing a Small Apartment: Achieving Comfort and Style

Living in an apartment that’s slightly smaller than most might seem like an unwelcome challenge, but with a little creativity and resourcefulness, you can transform your small living space into a cosy home that exudes both style and comfort. Here are a few key tips you can follow to improve your interior with a touch of class and comfort.

1

Make Use of Lighting

If done poorly, lighting can make your apartment look smaller and ruin a perfectly great atmosphere. The best way to incorporate lighting into your apartment is to give preference to natural light that not only brings your interior to life but also connects you to the world outside. Avoid blocking windows with dark curtains or blinds. Additionally, you can include a few ceiling spotlights and small table lamps on coffee tables or nightstands. Avoid using chandeliers as these can make your apartment look even smaller.

2

Use a Good Choice of Colours

A great combination of colours can do wonders to uplift your small apartments in Sri Lanka and make them seem lively. It is important to avoid darker colours since they absorb light and shrink up space; instead use a combination of light colours like greys, pastels, or beiges. You can also use light-coloured wood fittings or elements. A good principle is to make your floor the darkest element and keep all walls in light colours.

3

Customise Your Kitchen

Customising your kitchen is a great idea if you plan on cooking most of your own meals at home. Select materials that have a longer life and won’t require you to remodel your kitchen every few years. Also include light decor that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also optically enlarges your kitchen space. You’ll also need to do away with overly large furniture and appliances that could make your kitchen seem cluttered; consider getting a mini fridge and only keep what can be stored in a drawer or cabinet.

4

Use Only Necessary Furniture

Furniture is another necessary consideration that could make or break your apartment’s overall appeal. Naturally, smaller apartments require smaller pieces of furniture so large sofas will not be the best option. Individual pieces that stand on legs which aren’t too large are welcome. You’ll also need to consider an ergonomic table and chair if you plan to create a separate area for a workspace. You can also incorporate wall shelves, cupboards or chest of drawers to further maximise the space you have.

5

Add a Few Decorations

There are a few other additional elements you can add to further improve the ambience of your apartment, no matter how small it is. While these elements can be added to even larger apartments like those by Prime Residencies, they are particularly useful for elevating small spaces. Consider adding in a few mirrors as they are known to reflect light and make a space seem larger. You can hang one on a bare wall,  within your clothes closet or even in your front area if space permits it. Art pieces and paintings are another great addition to make your apartment feel lively. A few well-placed indoor plants will also go a long way to bring a sense of openness and freedom to your apartment.
