Walking through history – 5 unforgettable experiences to explore in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka

There is much to see in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s ancient city in the North Central Province. These include historic temples, religious artefacts, engineering wonders, and ruins of once-proud architectural grandeurs. Explore these sites which will transport you back to the roots of the grand city.

1

Gal Vihara

Deriving the meaning ‘Rock Monestry’, Gal Vihara is named after the most well-known rock-cut Buddha statues in Sri Lanka. They were originally part of the Northern Temple which was established by King Parakramabahu I. Four amazing statues, three enormous rock-cut images, and a smaller image, in a partially man-made cave, make up the exhibits at Gal Vihara. These sculptures, adorned with distinct designs, are known as Sri Lanka's finest examples of Buddha statues carved from solid granite.

Minneriya or Kaudulla National Parks

Two unmissable locations that wildlife enthusiasts must visit during their stay are the Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks. Discover these two wildlife sanctuaries with their varied landscapes and remarkable sightings. The arid evergreen Kaudulla National Park can be located around the historic Kaudulla Reservoir. Huge herds of elephants, wild boars, leopards, rusty spotted cats, sambar deer, and sloth bears can be found in the park, surrounded by expansive grasslands and scrubby forests.
The Minneriya National Park is close to the historically significant tank constructed by King Mahasen. You can find species like toque macaques, purple-faced langur monkeys, and spotted deer at this site. Elephant gatherings are frequent at both locations especially from June to September.
It is best to start a bit early for your excursions before the crowd arrives at such destinations. Many Polonnaruwa hotels are located near such places which are frequented by tourists. Pick a property like Hotel Sudu Araliya which is only around half an hour’s drive away from these national parks so you can make your way there without any hassle and get an early start to your wildlife expeditions.

Sigiriya Excursions

Sigiriya, a rock fortress, remains on top of a huge rock nearly 200 meters high. It is encircled by the remnants of a vast system of gardens, reservoirs, and other buildings. It is also called the ‘Lion Rock’ and is often considered as the eighth wonder of the world. Take a glimpse at the globally-famous frescos which are considered as the pinnacle of ancient Sri Lankan art. The place has great archaeological significance too. It is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site at present.

Parakrama Samudraya

Built between 1153 and 1186 during King Mahaparakram Bahu’s reign, this magnificent royal palace is seen as a token of magnificence in Polonnaruwa. The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982 due to its historic value. Records state that the building was seven stories high and comprised 1000 rooms. However, only three floors and 55 rooms of the structure can be seen today.
The Royal Bath, also known as Kumar Pokuna, is located outside the citadel and was built to receive water from the nearby water source. King Parakrambahu's Council Chamber is another component which can be found on the palace grounds.

Thivanka Image House

"Thivanka" means "three curves" in Sinhala.  Bricks are used to build this entire structure which houses frescoes that date back to the 12th century. The biggest selection of paintings that have been uncovered in the Polannaruwa kingdom can be seen at the Thivanka Image House.
