Top Scenic Spots in Galle for Photographers: Capturing the Essence of a Historic Town

The historic town of Galle is located towards the southwestern region of Sri Lanka and is one of the most scenic spots to visit on the island. Filled with colonial-style mansions and buildings, quaint cultural boutiques, and historic churches, Galle is a photographer’s paradise offering numerous opportunities for brilliant photography. Here are some of the best places to visit in Galle for those looking to capture the true essence of this town through the lens.

1

Dutch Fort

This well-preserved fortress is the most popular attraction in Galle and is one of the main destinations on various tours like those provided by Walkers Tours. The several historical buildings that line the fort’s cobblestone streets provide the perfect setting for some great photography that captures the essence of colonial-era Sri Lanka. You’ll find a unique mix of architectural styles from South Asia and Europe elegantly displayed in Dutch colonial buildings, monuments from the British era and Portuguese-styled churches.

2

Clock Tower

The Galle Fort Clock Tower is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, standing tall on the oceanfront amidst several Dutch ruins. It is four stories tall and includes a large clock face from 1883 after which it is named. In addition to capturing the perfect photograph of the tower against the blue skies, you can also climb the stone ramp for scenic views of the surrounding land and water.

3

Historical Mansion Museum

Another historical treasure worth visiting while you’re within the Galle Fort is the Historical Mansion Museum, which functions as more of an antique shop. Run by a single family, this quaint establishment contains a unique collection of various items like colonial artefacts, Chinese porcelain items, and other handicraft items. As you browse this collection of valuable relics you can snap some great close-ups of these pieces from bygone eras.

4

Galle Lighthouse

This is one of the oldest lighthouses in Sri Lanka built in 1848 and visiting is another of the popular things to do in Galle. Standing at 26.5 metres, the structure is the subject of many photographs that capture the historicity of the area. Many photographers choose to take advantage of the scenic surroundings to snap a photo of the fully automated lighthouse as a magnificent icon on the coast.

5

The Dutch Reformed Church

While you’re exploring the Dutch Fort you can also stop by the Dutch Reformed Church for more intriguing photography. Constructed in 1755, it is the oldest Protestant Church in the country and is abundant in colonial architectural features. But once inside the building, you’ll be greeted by a fascinating interior filled with relics from long ago and vibrant stained glasswork that adds a unique antiquated charm.

National Museum of Galle

This single-storey mansion built in 1656, is the oldest remaining Dutch building in Galle and fittingly carries the country’s colonial heritage. It has various items on display including traditional weapons, furniture, bronze work, statues, turtle shell ware, and other items. These provide valuable insight into Dutch, Portuguese and Chinese heritage and facilitate a closer look into Sri Lanka’s eventful past. Naturally, the museum is a paradise for photographers, particularly those looking to capture a slice of Sri Lankan history.
