The Maldivian archipelago is a diverse ecosystem brimming with many colourful species, both on land and in the water. Have a look at these 6 types of local wildlife when on holiday in the Maldives.

1

Sea Turtles

A major draw of calling by the Maldives for the sole purpose of witnessing its wildlife can be attributed to the prospect of going Sea Turtle watching. Best experienced between the months of June to November as this is when the female sea turtle comes ashore to lay her eggs, holidaymakers will be well placed to come into contact with a number of species including the Leatherback and Hawksbill Sea Turtle. What’s more? Spotting baby hatchlings scampering across the beach in the hope of reaching the ocean unscathed will easily be one of the highlights of your trip.

2

Fish

On the back of the Maldives being an island nation with as many as 26 atolls, it should come as no surprise that part of the country’s appeal is its stunning collection of fish. With almost 2,000 species to come into contact with, scheduling a snorkelling, scuba diving or diving trip will easily have you in awe of a spectacle that is destined to live long in your memory. Worthy of mention are Clownfish, Butterflyfish, Parrotfish and Angelfish which are among the most easily recognisable.

3

Dolphins

The thrill of experiencing pods of playful Dolphins in their natural habitat will serve as one of the fondest memories of your time in the Maldives. Perfectly suiting those who wish to spend time in the deeper sections of the ocean, the Maldives is where you can witness Fraser’s Dolphins, Bottleneck Dolphins, Rough-toothed Dolphins and Spinner Dolphins. In the event you seek a favourable mode of accommodation that will present you with a chance to engage with these marine mammals, then be sure to consider booking with hotels like Adaaran Club Rannalhi which offers a host of Maldives places to visit.

Given the environment that the Maldives finds itself in, flocks of pelagic birds are aplenty with a majority being migratory. While Pond Herons, Grey Herons and Common Mynas can easily be seen, should you opt to venture inland and in the direction of the country’s natural resources, then you are bound to stumble upon species in the likes of the Black-naped Tern and Sandpiper. As is customary with any bird watching trip, having a local guide assist you will certainly help your cause while carrying your trusty pair of binoculars will only enhance your viewing experience.

Fruit Bats

Fundamentally nocturnal in nature, Fruit Bats can be seen hanging from the branches of trees near your villa or bungalow. In an attempt to catch a glimpse of these fascinating species, you will be required to step out at night and keep your ears and eyes open. Often found upside down with their faces covered by their large, webbed wings, Fruit Bats and their bewildered expressions would indeed make for quite the photographic opportunity.
