If you're fortunate enough have all of your arms and legs, chances are that you take them for granted. The human body is a remarkable piece of biological machinery, and your limbs are no exception. For example, consider the delicate and complex tasks hands can perform, such as writing in calligraphy or playing the violin.
Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory researchers are talking with entrepreneurs about commercializing a revolutionary prosthetic limb that can be operated by a person's thoughts. The limb uses different mechanisms for brain control, including a brain/computer interface for spinal cord patients and surface electrodes for amputees.
An estimated 2 million Americans have had an arm or leg amputated from injury or illness. Many chose to wear prosthetic limbs. Ten years ago, most artificial arms and legs were clunky and fragile. But prosthetic technology has advanced significantly since then.
The secret purpose of my most recent mechanical hand has been revealed! I crafted it for the use of Seattle's evil mastermind, Rex Velvet. Watch the video to see what he has done with my diabolical creation. What have I done? WHAT HAVE I DONE?? MWAHAHAHAAAAA!!!
Two years ago, Ivan Owen was a hobbyist, accordion player and craftsman who built medieval armor, metal costumes, and chain jewelry, which he sold through his Etsy shop, ChainCrafts. When he hacked together an oversized mechanical hand as an experiment and posted a 49-second clip on YouTube, he had no idea the course of his life was about to change forever.
3D printing is revolutionizing the field of prosthetics. San Francisco company Bespoke Innovations is printing designer prosthetics specifically to restore symmetry to the bodies of amputees, while making a fashion statement at the same time. Reuters video report by Ben Gruber: Transcript: Dennis Weikel is having the lower half of his body scanned and digitised.

The Revolutionizing Prosthetics program is an enormous scientific research and advanced development effort that is enabling development of many exciting new technologies. Each of the three key elements of the program-the Modular Prosthetic Limb; the neural interface, including devices and signal processing/control algorithms; and the Virtual Integration Environment-have contributed to state-of-the-science applications.
The Modular Prosthetic Limb features Anthropomorphic (lifelike) form factor and appearance Human-like strength and dexterity High-resolution tactile and position sensing Neural interface for intuitive and natural closed-loop control Sensorization The arm and hand pictured below contain more than 100 sensors. Many candidate technologies were prototyped and evaluated by using a custom test bed and standardized processes.
Thanks to research that will culminate this year in a major set of new designs, procedures and prototypes for artificial limbs, highly advanced prosthetics might eventually become commonplace, perhaps in another generation. However, much more research must be done in the ways human tissue interacts with mechanical parts.
You've heard of sleight of hand; how about sleight of foot? Behind her grinning and foot-tapping, Miranda Cochran's ability to dance competitively has a way of inspiring folks. "When people tell me I inspire them, I know," said the 12-year-old from Frisco. What makes her inspiring? Cochran was born without her left foot.
Satisfied customers *not all of the folks on this page are my customers. There are a couple for whom I did work at no cost as a way of giving back. This page features a few photos of people that I've created things for in the past.
