A First-TIme Explorer’s Guide to Langkawi: Discovering the Best the Island Has to Offer

Known as the ‘Jewel of Kedah’, Langkawi is an archipelago in Malaysia that has 99 islands and boasts plenty of natural beauty for travellers to enjoy. From several relaxing beaches to vast rainforests, expansive rice fields,  several historical relics and more, Langkawi has several attractions that are worth exploring. But if you are a first-time visitor who might find all these options a little intimidating, here are a few select places to explore during your first visit to Langkawi.

1

Underwater World

Underwater World is the biggest aquarium in Malaysia, housing over 4,000 marine species and life forms within an area of more than 60,000 square feet. One of the most popular species that attract large crowds at the aquarium is the Jurassic Arapaima which is the world’s largest freshwater fish. The whole of the Underwater World is separated into three sections which are Tropical, Temperate and Sub Antarctic. Visiting the aquarium can also be an educational experience if you are travelling with kids, featuring an educational resource centre and a 3D theatre.

Langkawi SkyCab

This iconic cable car ride is located at The Oriental Village in the northwest region of the island, a short distance from PARKROYAL Langkawi Resort, and is the perfect way to experience scenic views of the surrounding islands and the sea. It is known as the world’s steepest SkyCab and also features the longest free-span mono-cable that takes passengers to the top of Mount Mat Cincang. Despite its significant length, the entire ride takes around 15 minutes with a full round trip totalling around 28 minutes. There are three stations along the ride that each offer fascinating views of caves, cliffs, mountains and water bodies.

Langkawi Wildlife Park

This alluring sanctuary features an extensive arena and beautiful gardens that provide a haven for various wild animals and around 2500 species of birds. Visitors can witness several of the animals including deer, monkeys, alligators, turtles, porcupines, lizards and more. If you’re more of a bird lover, you’ll find plenty of species to admire including hornbills, toucans, eagles, owls, flamingos, cranes, peacocks and more. You’ll be able to walk along the one-way path that goes around the sanctuary from where you can feed the animals with help from the guides. You can also purchase souvenirs, jewellery and various duty-free items at the park as well.

Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls

Commonly known as Seven Wells Waterfalls, this is one of the island’s most popular natural locations as it is conveniently located a short drive from even the best resort in Langkawi. Its name refers to the series of seven interconnected natural pools that are formed by the seven waterfalls at Mount Mat Cincang. The spot is frequented by hikers looking to climb to the top of the waterfall through a series of steps at the site. In addition to its refreshing pools of water, the area is brought to life by various plants, flowers and trees which are used in many Malay ceremonies. You’ll also witness several wildlife species including hornbills, giant squirrels and long-tailed macaque monkeys.

Rice Garden Museum

Rice farming is a significant part of Langkawi’s local way of life and is best explored at the Rice Garden Museum or Laman Padi Langkawi. Visitors can learn all about rice cultivation practices through various artworks, charts, pictures and several farming tools and equipment. Spreading across 14 acres, the museum is divided into the Paddy Gallery, Heritage Gallery, Herb Garden, and the Garden of Variety, each providing a glimpse into various aspects of rice farming. You’ll also find various rice-themed handicraft items that you can buy from the gift shop to remember your visit there.
