Top Historical Sites to Explore in Galle – Five Must-Visit Spots Perfect for Exploring

Galle is indeed a must-visit for anyone travelling through Sri Lanka. With its extensive history and unparalleled beauty, one is bound to be transfixed by this location. Whether it’s maritime history or not, this article explores five historical sites to visit when holidaying in Galle.

1

Galle Fort

This UNESCO World Heritage Site was originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later fortified by the Dutch, making it one of Galle’s most iconic locations. Visitors will love strolling along the ancient ramparts, with the ocean stretching endlessly beside them, as they take in the salt air and historical architecture around them. The fort has lots to offer its visitors, from quaint cafes and restaurants to clothing and souvenir shops, as well as museums, places of worship, and even ice cream parlours.

2

Dutch Reformed Church

Located within Galle Fort itself, the Dutch Reformed Church is one of the oldest Protestant churches in Sri Lanka, dating back to 1755. The church’s simple yet elegant structure is a testament to Galle’s extensive and tumultuous history. The interiors feature wooden pews, an intricately carved pulpit, and a peaceful atmosphere that is bound to be loved by its visitors.

3

National Maritime Museum

For those who are endlessly fascinated by the sea, then a visit to the National Maritime Museum is in order. Highlighting Sri Lanka’s rich maritime history, this museum is housed in a 17th-century Dutch warehouse and offers visitors a variety of exhibits such as ancient navigational tools and maps to models of ships and artefacts recovered from shipwrecks off the coast of Galle.

One of the highlights of the National Maritime Museum is the carefully preserved collection of items from the Avondster, a Dutch ship that sank near Galle in 1659. Visitors to the museum will also learn the significance of Galle as a key port along ancient trade routes.

For stays at boutique hotels, Sri Lanka has no shortage of exquisite options, and visitors planning a holiday to Galle can consider booking a comfortable stay at properties offered by the likes of KK Collection.

4

All Saints’ Church

Situated within the Galle Fort, the All Saints’ Church was built by the British in 1871 and features exquisite Gothic architecture. For those who enjoy church interiors and architecture, they will love visiting the All Saints’ Church simply for its pointed arches, stained glass windows, and intricate stone carvings.

Upon stepping inside the church, one’s breath will be immediately taken away by the high ceilings, polished wooden pews, and a beautiful marble altar. The calm and quiet of the church offers visitors some respite from the busy street outside and is perfect for relaxation or strolling through its adjoining garden.

5

Meeran Jumma Mosque

Galle is known for many things and its multicultural heritage is one of them. Widely known as the Galle Fort Mosque, the Meeran Jumma Mosque is a testament to the city’s multicultural heritage. It was built in 1904 by a devout and wealthy Muslim named Ahamed Haji Ismail, who also built a mosque in neighbouring Weligama. Its location on the edge of the street and within proximity to the lighthouse, makes it one of the most beautiful locations in Galle, especially at sunset.

This 19th-century mosque features a whitewashed exterior and elegant minarets and domes, and makes a sharp contrast to the surrounding colonial buildings. Visitors must be mindful of their attire if they plan to visit the mosque. They should be dressed modestly and be respectful of the surroundings when they are inside.
