Best Adventurous Places in Galle to Visit on Your Holiday – Discover Sri Lanka’s beautiful southern capital!

Galle is the most important city in Southern Sri Lanka, and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the region. The iconic Galle fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. Known for its rich cultural heritage, there are many adventures to be had in this charming coastal destination:

1

Visit the Fort

Galle is famous for its well-preserved Dutch Fort, constructed by the Portuguese in 1588. Inside the massive walls are historical and administrative buildings and places of worship, many of which are from the Dutch and British periods, dating back to the 17th century. The inner streets have a southern European ambience with cafes, shops, restaurants, and museums on narrow cobbled streets.

The best time to explore the Fort is before 10 am and after 4 pm. Watch the sunset from the western ramparts while sipping a chilled lime juice.

2

View the Ramparts and Lighthouse

Another famous landmark in Galle is the Lighthouse, situated at the southern tip of the Fort on the Utrecht bastion. There is a bathing spot close by, or if you prefer, just soak in the magnificent views of the Indian Ocean. Walk along the ramparts, dotted with old cannons facing the sea.

Accommodation is available either within the Fort or in the Galle town. Visitors can find plenty of great boutique hotels in Galle that offer top-notch services and amenities, such as Kahanda Kanda.

3

Explore the Churches

Travellers can explore the oldest protestant church on the island, the Dutch Reformed Church. Also known as “Groote Kerk”, it was built in 1640, and is located on Church Street. Its floor and yard are lined with old gravestones, providing an insight into the inhabitants of Galle in bygone times. You could also visit the All-Saints Anglican Church next door.

4

Discover Rumassla Kanda and Jungle Beach

If you leave the Fort and go south past the Port, there is a hill covered in thick forest known as Rumassla Kanda. This location has been linked to the Ramayana legend, and visitors can take a hike to the summit of this scenic hill. The land around Rumassala is known as “Buona Vista” and offers stunning views of the bay, the Fort and Galle town.

Visitors can also head to the beautiful and hidden Jungle Beach, located at the summit of the hill. Direct access from here is possible but it’s a steep trek down. Alternatively, you can reach it from Unawatuna Beach. The beach is safe for swimming, with clear blue waters and white sands, though it can get a little busy during the tourist season.

5

Relax at Unawatuna, Mihiripenna and Talpe beaches

For swimming and watersports, head to one of the safest and most popular stretches of beach in Sri Lanka, Unawatuna, located about 5 km away from Galle. The coral reef makes the water safe even for children. It’s a great spot for snorkelling, sunbathing or watching the stilt fisherman.

Unawatuna Beach can get crowded, especially during weekends and holidays. However, if you travel further south towards Mihiripenne and Talpe, you’ll find a more peaceful environment for swimming and relaxing.

6

Trek through Kannaliya Lowland Rainforest

Explore Kannaliya, one of Sri Lanka’s last remaining rainforests - located about 35 km northeast of Galle. This adventure requires a one-day trip, including the 4 km trek in the forest. Accommodation is also available close to the reserve.

The major tributaries of two important rivers in the south, Gin Ganga and Nilwala Ganga originate in the forest. It is home to several endemic trees and plants along with bird and butterfly species, mammals, amphibians, and freshwater fish. September to February are the best times to visit.
