5 Key Temples in the Kalutara District of Sri Lanka – Experience a Rich Religious Heritage

Known for being an ideal destination in Sri Lanka to enjoy beachside bliss, the Kalutara District has much more to offer as well. If you are looking to gain insights into the island’s Buddhist heritage, you can visit some of the key temples here, each providing something new to discover.

1

Kalutara Temple

As you enter the city along the coastal road, the towering Kalutara Temple is a landmark you cannot miss seeing. Featuring one of the few hollow Buddhist stupas in the world, this revered religious site is believed to contain sacred relics of the Buddha which makes it a popular place for devotees as well. Step inside the temple and immerse yourself in its serene atmosphere. Admire the intricate Buddha statues and observe the fascinating murals depicting scenes from the life story of Lord Buddha. The narrow windows below these murals offer panoramic views of the river and the town, providing a moment of tranquillity. Don't miss the nearby Kalutara Bodhiya, a sacred site featuring two Bodhi trees. Interestingly, one of these trees is a descendant of the Sri Maha Bodhi tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment.

2

Kande Viharaya

Kande Viharaya, one of the largest Buddhist temples in the district, is situated near Aluthgama within easy reach of resorts in Kalutara. Its name translates to "Mountain Temple" and not surprisingly, you will find it on a hill. The site dates to the 18th century though it’s renowned for a relatively new addition; an impressive 48-metre-tall statue of Lord Buddha, one of the tallest sitting Buddha statues in the world! Explore the temple grounds and discover a wealth of cultural treasures. Admire the murals depicting Lord Buddha's life and visit the ancient Bodhi Tree, several shrines and a captivating relic chamber. You can look to gain more insights at a small museum which showcases various artefacts as well.

3

Asokaramaya Temple

Built in the 1870s, the Asokaramaya Temple was established as a sanctuary for the disciples of the renowned monk, Aluthgama Sangharatne. The monk's sermons attracted a wealthy businessman who funded the construction of the temple complex, easy to reach on excursions from properties such as Avani Kalutara Resort. Soak up the serenity of this religious haven where you will come across highlights such as a noteworthy bell tower and a sacred Bodhi tree, an essential feature at all Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. As you explore further, you can visit the relic chamber and take in the sight of Buddha statues and beautiful murals within the shrine room.

4

Rankoth Temple

The Rankoth Temple, easily recognisable from a distance, is the most significant Buddhist site in the Panadura area which is within the Kalutara District. Its stupa, built according to traditional ancient designs, is a striking feature. Originally known as "Galkanda Viharaya," the temple was renamed "Rankoth Viharaya" in 1890 to honour the pagoda constructed during that time. Explore the temple grounds and discover the Bodhi tree, believed to be older than the temple itself. On your visit, you can also admire the murals which depict Lord Buddha’s incarnations adding to the site’s appeal.

5

Lenawara Raja Maha Viharaya

The Lenawara Raja Maha Viharaya is one of the most historically significant temples in the Kalutara District. This sacred site also known as the Lenawara Ancient Royal Temple (if you are looking for it on Google Maps), is believed to have even existed during the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa in the 11th century, offering a glimpse into the past. Embark on a hike to explore the scattered complexes around the hill, culminating in a visit to the temple pagoda at the summit. Enjoy breathtaking views of the countryside while immersing yourself in the site’s rich history and spiritual ambience.
