7 Things You Should Never Pack in Checked Luggage – Pack wisely to ensure a safe and sound flight!

Air travel can often be stressful, but knowing what to pack in your checked luggage can significantly ease that burden. Being mindful of prohibited items ensures that your baggage doesn’t pose a safety risk to the aircraft or other passengers' belongings. Discover a comprehensive list of items that cannot go in checked baggage, allowing you to breeze through airport security with peace of mind.

1

Devices containing Lithium metal or ion batteries

Nowadays many electronic devices we use such as laptops, tablets, smartphones, smartwatches, e-readers, cameras, portable chargers etc. come with lithium batteries. When these batteries are carried either loose or inside devices if they are damaged or when their terminals are short-circuited, they can catch fire or explode. Therefore, they are prohibited items on a plane and are not permitted inside the passengers’ checked luggage.

2

Compressed Gases

Compressed gases such as Butane, Propane, Oxygen tanks and SCUBA Tanks are not allowed in the checked luggage. Bear Spray, cooking spray and spray starch are included under these. The reason is that if these are likely to go off inside the checked luggage, they can endanger the aircraft. Passengers who require administration of oxygen in-flight must request such a service in advance from the airline or have an oxygen concentrator with adequate battery power to last the flight duration.

3

Corrosive or Oxidizing chemicals

Any chemical that is treated as a Hazardous Material (Hazmat) should not be packed in the checked luggage. These can be paint-stripper, chlorine, drain cleaners, apparel stain removers, hair colours, hair dye and strong acids that come under Hazmat items as they can cause harm to the aircraft, passengers and baggage handlers.

4

Alcoholic Beverages

Alcoholic beverages that contain over 70% alcohol (or over 140 proof) are considered flammable material and considered a risk to be carried in the aircraft hold. Hence, they are not permitted in checked luggage. Tequila, hard cider, standard wine and sake are a few of the alcohol types that fall under 70%. However, always make sure before packing these in.

5

Firearms and Weapons

Firearms and weapons including guns, replicas and ammunition should not be carried in checked luggage as these can cause a breach in the safety and security of passengers and crew. Responsible airline operators such as InterCaribbean Airways are quite conscious of these elements as the safety of passengers and crew is a Corporate Value of this company.

6

E- cigarettes and Vapes

These alternatives for cigarettes carried by passengers are not permitted in checked luggage at all as they contain lithium batteries. Smoke, fire or extreme heat can be emitted by these items affecting other baggage and creating damage in the luggage hold.

7

Fireworks or firecrackers

These items should not be carried at all in the checked luggage by passengers as they are extremely flammable items and explosives. These tend to be carried around by passengers during festive times in different parts of the world and airport staff are vigilant about them. They pose a critical safety breach to the passengers, crew and the aircraft and hence will not be permitted in checked luggage.
