National Parks around Khao Lak - Making a trip of Khao Lak's Nature

Khao Lak, nestled along Thailand's Andaman coast, is a gateway to some of the most breathtaking national parks in the region. These parks, characterized by lush rainforests, towering limestone cliffs, and diverse wildlife, offer a sanctuary for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. From the pristine waters of Similan Islands National Park, renowned for world-class diving, to the rich biodiversity of Khao Sok National Park, where ancient rainforests meet serene lakes, Khao Lak's national parks present a perfect blend of natural beauty and outdoor activities.

1

Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park, located in Surat Thani, is just 73 km (about a 1 hour and 15-minute drive) north of Khao Lak. This park is home to one of the world's oldest evergreen rainforests, featuring expansive lakes, limestone mountains, and dense flora. Accessible by bus, minibus, or ferry from Khao Lak or Krabi, it offers two main hotspots: the headquarters in Khao Sok Village and the stunning Khao Sok Lake (Cheow Lan Lake), 67 km to the east. The lake is famous for its raft houses, waterfalls, caves, trails, campsites, and breathtaking viewpoints, making it a must-visit destination.

Si Phang Nga National Park

Si Phang Nga National Park, located in Khura Buri District, 60 km (about a one-hour drive) north of Khao Lak, was established in honour of His Majesty the King on his 60th birthday anniversary. This lush forested area is rich in flora and fauna, featuring numerous hills, streams, waterfalls, and a few limestone cliffs. The park's most famous spot is Tam Nang Waterfall, accessible via a challenging 3.2 km out-and-back trail that takes about 1 hour and 8 minutes to complete. This trail, popular for bird watching, hiking, and walking, is best visited from January through October. For those looking for things to do in Khao Lak, this is a good excursion of choice from your stay at places like the Avani+ Khao Lak Resort.

Khlong Phanom Park

Khlong Phanom National Park, located 85 km (about a one and a half-hour drive) northeast of Khao Lak in Surat Thani, is a hidden gem featuring rugged limestone peaks, wildlife-rich forests, and vital marshlands. Often overshadowed by the nearby Khao Sok National Park, Khlong Phanom offers unique experiences like a canoe tour starting at the Wat Tham Wararam cave temple, followed by a refreshing stroll through Kaew Cave to reach the river. The park also boasts the secluded Ton Yai Waterfall in the southeast.

Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park

Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park, just a 10-minute drive from La On, is a popular destination among tourists due to its central location along the Andaman Sea. The park features primarily tropical evergreen montane forests, with its highest peak reaching 1,077 meters. The park headquarters are located in Khao Lak Center (La On), and the area is renowned for its hidden gem, Small Sandy Beach, accessible via the Hat Lek Nature Trail. Other highlights include Ton Chong Fa Waterfall, located 12 km from the headquarters, and the larger Lam Ru Waterfall, situated 45 km to the north.

Khao Lampi-Hat Thai Muaeng Park

Khao Lampi–Hat Thai Mueang National Park, located an hour's drive south of Khao Lak in Thai Mueang, is famed for its stunning waterfalls and pristine beach. The park is divided into two sections: the Lampi Range, characterized by ancient mountains of igneous rocks dating back 60-140 million years, and the Thai Mueang Range. In the eastern mountains of the Lampi Range, you'll find two notable waterfalls: the 40-meter-tall Ton Phrai Waterfall, particularly impressive during the rainy season, and the Lampi Waterfall, which features four tiers and a pond perfect for swimming.
