Lesser Known Islands in the Maldives to Visit: Exploring the Unknown

If you’ve been planning a trip to the Maldives, then you’ve likely done your research to identify the best possible islands in the archipelago that you can travel to for your stay. Islands like Male, Biyadhoo Island, Hulhumale Island and Fihalhohi Island are some of the names that you’ve likely been recommended. However, if you’re planning to go against the grain and explore some of the lesser-known islands in the Maldives, here are 5 great islands that you should consider visiting, at least for a day of adventure.

1

Olhuveli Island

This pristine and rather uninhabited island boasts white sandy beaches that are perfect for a relaxing holiday. Honeymoon couples and solo travellers will find this island the ideal paradise with its aesthetic views of the ocean, luxury accommodations and local restaurants that serve up the best local cuisines.

2

Thoddoo Island

This oval-shaped island is one of the lesser-explored locations in the Maldives but is known for its immense watermelon production. Those looking to experience the authentic Maldivian lifestyle will enjoy a stay on this island with its diverse cultural practices and delicious seafood-based dishes. You can also stroll around the local markets and interact with the local communities for an enriching local experience.

3

Utheemu Island

This is one of the Maldivian islands that carries great historical significance. It is located in the northern part of Haa Alif Atoll and was previously the home of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, the individual responsible for driving out Portuguese invaders in the late sixteenth century. In addition to its crystal blue beaches, the island also features various heritage sites, like the Utheemu Ganduvaru, that add to the island’s cultural significance.

4

Feydhoo Island

This is yet another island that has a unique historical background. It was formed when Gan Island was invaded by the British in WWII which resulted in its local population being relocated to a nearby island in the Seenu Atoll now known as Feydhoo Island. A visit to the island will reveal the tight housing blocks along leafy streets in which the locals live. There are plenty of serene walkways to explore as well as a mix of lifestyles and cultures that are practised among the locals.

5

Maradhoo Island

Located right next to Feydhoo Island, this thin, long island features atmospheric beach fronts lined with groves of coconut palms and is known for its friendly and welcoming local communities. A prime destination for couples on their honeymoon, the island also features several local shops worth exploring, as well as street food vendors serving delicious sandwiches and authentic seafood.

6

Thulusdhoo Island

This is one of the most beautiful islands in the archipelago and emits a Caribbean charm and atmosphere with large coconut trunks lining the sandy shores. Its beaches are also perfect for a seafood barbecue and its waters are perfect for several activities including surfing, swimming, paddle boarding and more. If you happen to be staying at one of the nearby private islands in Maldives in a resort such as the Niyama Private Islands Maldives, you could make a visit to enjoy the unique vibes of Thulusdhoo Island.

7

Fuvahmulah Island

This island is the only one that occupies an atoll of its own and is the perfect place for those looking to enjoy some peace and solitude. Located close to the equator, the island remains warm throughout the year and even features a rare inland lake. It is perfect for couples and solo travellers looking to enjoy some quiet time away from the noise and crowds.
