Activities to Enjoy on Private Islands in the Maldives: Venturing Beyond Male

While Male is frequently visited and explored by visitors to the Maldives, the archipelagic state has plenty more to offer outside of its capital island, with over 1192 islands across 26 atolls. From diving with various marine animals to enjoying a natural bioluminescent show on the beach, here are some of the best activities to enjoy across several of the private islands in the Maldives, away from its cultural capital.

1

Swim with Whale Sharks

The ocean waters that surround the Maldives often feature the best hotspots for spotting whale sharks all year round. While those that frequent the Maldives waters are smaller than whale sharks found elsewhere, they still measure up to 8 metres and easily dwarf any brave diver willing to swim alongside them. If you’re one such diver looking to swim with these magnificent creatures, you can find them in the South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area where you can enjoy diving excursions, swimming tours and snorkelling tours that feature whale sharks.

2

Witness Bioluminescence on the Shore

If you’re looking for something a little more magical, the Sea of Stars bioluminescent phenomenon on the shores of Vaadhoo Island might just be what you’re looking for. This phenomenon refers to the display of bioluminescence caused by microscopic plankton in the water, often visible at night and which resembles the stars in the night sky. The best time to witness this magnificent display is from June to October.

3

Explore the Dhadimagi Kilhi Lake

Located in the Fuvahmulah Atoll, this picturesque lake is the second-largest lake in the Maldives, covering an area of 6.37 hectares. It is the most visited lake due to the lush green vegetation that surrounds it and the overall calmness of its waters. It has been declared a protected area of the Fuvahmulah and is one of the cleanest lakes with water that has medicinal properties.

4

Visit the Utheemu Ganduvaru

Utheemu Island in the Haa Alif Atoll is one of the most historically significant islands in the Maldives with its star attraction being the Utheemu Ganduvaru monument. This historical building was once the home of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu who was responsible for driving away the Portugues from the islands during the late 16th century. The residence now serves as a museum that still features interiors that date back 500 years.

5

Enjoy Thrilling Water Sports

If you’re the type to enjoy a thrilling adventure above the water’s surface there are plenty of water sporting activities to be a part of. Surfing, kayaking, jet skiing, flyboarding, tube rides, kitesurfing, and waterskiing are some of the activities that you can enjoy on most of the islands in the Maldives. If you are staying at a beach villa in Maldives, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to organise any one of these activities. Additionally, resorts like the Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort provide underwater excursions such as scuba diving and snorkelling with guidance from certified instructors.

Enjoy a Meal Underwater

The Ithaa Undersea Restaurant offers visitors the unique opportunity to dine underwater 5 metres below sea level at Conrad Rangali Island in the Alif Dhaal Atoll. Built as an acrylic structure that can hold a total of 14 persons, the restaurant features a glass rooftop that offers panoramic views of the surrounding coral gardens that stay vibrant marine life. Diners can enjoy European and Asian food and even host private parties and celebrations at the restaurant.
