The American Petroleum Institute released the new tenth edition API Spec Q1 -
Specification for Quality Management System Requirements for Manufacturing
Organizations for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry on September 1, 2023.
The 10th edition significantly broadens its scope compared to the 9th edition:
• Now includes organizations providing a wider variety of products and services to the petroleum and natural gas industry.
• Covers organizations involved in engineering and design services, physical product realization activities (e.g., welding, heat treating, coating), and physical product-related activities (e.g., distribution, logistics, software development).
The 10th edition aligns with ISO 9001:2015, while the 9th edition was tied to the 2008 version of the ISO standard.
The record retention period has been expanded from 5 years in the 9th edition to 10 years in the 10th edition.
The 10th edition introduces alternatives to the traditional Quality Manual, providing organizations with more flexibility in documenting their quality management system.
The 10th edition expands requirements for supplier evaluations, adding steps for initial evaluations of critical and non-critical purchases, as well as supplier re-evaluations.
• Revised definition of "product" to align with the expanded scope.
• Changed "Design and Development" section to simply "Design".
• Clarification on validation of processes.
• Revised wording around product inspection and final acceptance process.
• Enhanced focus on risk-based approaches.
These changes to the API spec Q1 standard reflect the industry's evolution and aim to promote continuous improvement, reduce the likelihood of nonconforming products, and drive operational efficiency across a broader range of organizations in the petroleum and natural gas industry.
