Khao Yai National Park: 5 Must-See Highlights - Discover the Serene Beauty of Nature

Located just a few hours from Bangkok, Khao Yai National Park is Thailand’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Blessed with nature’s bounty, the park is a must-visit for anyone travelling to Thailand.

1

Waterfalls

One of the most stunning features of Khao Yai National Park is its waterfalls, which are scattered throughout the park. These picturesque waterfalls add to the serene environment. If you need a break from hiking, you can simply sit by the waterfalls and soak in the beauty that envelops Khao Yai. Haew Narok Waterfall is the most popular in the park. With three tiers cascading down 150 metres, this waterfall is truly enchanting, and the sound of rushing water can be heard from miles away. It only takes a short, easy hike to reach the viewpoint, where you can admire the waterfall and the surrounding landscape from above. Haew Suwat is another popular spot, featured in the movie ‘The Beach.’ This waterfall plunges 20 metres and is easy to access, making it ideal for those who want to enjoy the splendour of nature without a challenging hike. There’s also a large pool at the base.

Wildlife

Khao Yai National Park is currently one of the best places in Thailand to see wildlife. Its diverse ecosystems, ranging from dense forests to grasslands, are home to a wide variety of animals. With over 300 species, including birds, mammals, and reptiles, you might even spot some of the rarest animals here. The population of wild elephants is a major draw for wildlife enthusiasts. These gentle giants can be seen meandering through the park—be sure to arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon, as these are their most active times. As you explore, listen closely to the sound of gibbons, a melody that blends with the natural sounds of the park. These agile creatures can move from tree to tree in seconds, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of them in the canopy. Birdwatchers will also find plenty to enjoy here, with the park being home to a wide variety of birds, including the great hornbill. These large, colourful birds are a symbol of the park and indicate a healthy ecosystem. When it comes to spotting wildlife, you have to align with their schedule—morning and evening are the best times. However, getting to the park at these times can be challenging unless you stay at a boutique hotel in Khaoyai.  You have several options, including Lacol Khaoyai, which is just 10 minutes from the park.

Hiking Trails

Khao Yai National Park offers a variety of hiking trails suited to all levels. Whether you're looking for an easy walk or a more challenging hike, the park has something for everyone. The Pha Kluai Mai to Haew Suwat Trail is one of the most popular routes, winding through dense forests, along rivers, and past waterfalls. This trail isn’t as difficult as some of the others and takes only about two to three hours to complete. Looking for a bit of adventure? The trail to the top of Khao Khieo is perfect for you. It leads to the highest point in the park, where you'll be rewarded with some of the most breathtaking panoramic views you'll ever see. The hike is quite steep and can be exhausting, but the views at the top make it all worthwhile.

4

Bat Cave

The Bat Cave in Khao Yai National Park offers a unique experience. A massive bat population lives here, and in the evening, they fly out of the cave to start their day—a sight that’s both enchanting and slightly eerie. While they’re harmless, it’s best to keep a safe distance.

5

Vineyards

Khao Yai is also home to some of the most famous vineyards in Thailand. The cool climate and fertile soil create the perfect environment for growing grapes, and the region grows some of the best wines in the country. For wine tours and garden walks, you can visit PB Valley Winery, one of the largest vineyards in Thailand. Another popular vineyard is GranMonte, a family-run winery known for producing high-quality wines using sustainable methods.
