Koh Samui’s Best Natural Wonders: Exploring Nature’s Brilliance

The stunning island paradise of Koh Samui has plenty of cultural wonders to explore. However, it is also home to several natural wonders that any adventurer would love to explore. If you are planning to travel to Koh Samui for your next vacation and are looking for the perfect adventure outdoors, here are some of the best natural attractions you can explore during your island vacation.

1

Hin Ta and Hin Yai

Hin Ta and Hin Yai are a group of interesting rock formations located in the southern part of Lamai Beach and a half-hour drive from the Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort. Their names refer to Grandpa (Ta) and Grandma (Yai) for their resemblance of male and female genitalia. These unusual formations have given rise to legends that tell of an old couple who lived in the area with their son. While looking for a suitable bride for their son, the old couple were lost at sea and turned into rocks as proof to any would-be bride’s parents of their intentions for their son. The rocks are an ideal spot from which you can view spectacular views of the ocean and the surrounding beach area.

Na Muang Waterfalls

These two consecutive waterfalls are one of the most picturesque Koh Samui attractions, owing to the surrounding purple rocks that give it its name. Several of these rocks and nearby tree roots form a natural staircase that leads to the base of Na Muang 1, where you’ll find a large natural pool beneath the waterfall. As you walk further up the mountain, you’ll reach Na Muang 2, which is smaller but equally beautiful. The waterfalls are a popular attraction for families, particularly from September to November, when the waterfalls are at full force.

3

Lamai Overlap Stone

This refers to a large natural rock that stands precariously at 8 metres tall on top of another rock, making it an unusual natural occurrence which captivates visitors. It also provides unparalleled views of the island’s east coast, the beautiful Lamai beach and the surrounding jungle and landscapes. The site is accessible via a steep, rough dirt track that must be attempted on a bike or a 4x4. The last stretch of road leading to the stone must be taken on foot, depending on the conditions.

4

Thong Takhian Bay

This 250-metre tropical haven is located just north of Lamai Beach and makes for a scenic getaway. Surrounded by lush green hills, limestone rock formations and crystal clear waters, Thong Takhian Bay is a testament to the unparalleled beauty of nature. The Bay is home to several long-established hotels and restaurants, however, it remains open to those staying elsewhere on the island. There’s certainly plenty to enjoy including snorkelling, swimming, sunbathing and kayaking.

5

Ang Thong National Marine Park

This is an archipelago of 42 islands that offers plenty to explore for the outdoor-loving traveller including thick jungles, large limestone mountains, fertile mangroves, hidden coves and lakes, waterfalls and sandy beaches. It covers an area of more than 100 square kilometres, with 4 distinct types of forest that are home to langurs, otters, pacific reef egrets, pythons, herons and more. Because of its rich natural environment and biodiversity, Ang Thong National Marine Park has been deemed a protected area.
